    HI and thanks for the advice.

    After the code failed to work I deleted it from the custom.css file, which is why you couldn’t find it. Still, this is the first time I’ve tried to customise css in the custom.css file – previously I’ve made all my css changes in the quick css editor – so I have no idea what you mean when you describe ‘a load of css commands inside some odd plugins’, or how this happened. Is this something I need to rectify – and how do I do this?

    However, the good news is that I tried a negative spacing value – of -32px – and this works perfectly! I put the code in the css quick edit section.

    in reply to: Change spacing/padding between sidebar widgets? #82417

    I inserted the following code:

    .sidebar .widget {

    margin-bottom: 50px;

    }

    into my custom. css file but, unfortunately, to no effect.

    What I’m trying to do is narrow the spaces between ads, so changed the px to 5 and 0, and still nothing. I tried inserting the code into Quick CSS and nothing doing here either.

    Just to be clear, I located the custom.css file using my host’s FTP file manager. I went wp-content>themes>shoutbox>css>custom css. And put the code in the custom.css file. Is this the right process?

    What am I doing wrong here? Thanks

    Hello Ismael

    There is no code in your reply. At least, I can’t see anything. Can you post it again. Thanks

    in reply to: Big advertisement area size, and file type supported #55312

    Thanks Devin

    I’m using the javascript and HTML code in the Text widgets and inserting ads this way – which, I guess, is the normal way. I just thought perhaps I was missing something with the Shoutbox Advertising widgets.

    Thanks again for the great support.

    Thanks for pointing out the need for more specific comment. Your suggestion didn’t do the trick, but I’ll fiddle about till I find the solution.

    in reply to: Big advertisement area size, and file type supported #55310

    What about in the sidebar, using the Shoutbox Advertising Area or Shoutbox Big Advertising Area widgets? These only seem to give options for images linked to URLs, not to Javascript or HTML code, which is used for most ads. Is it possible to insert Javascript or HTML code in Shoutbox Advertising Area widgets? Thanks

    in reply to: Issue with Permalinks, 404 (Page Not Found) Error #74445

    Thanks Devin. I will try this… again, since I’ve tried it before, without success. Maybe this time, I’ll cross my fingers.

    in reply to: Issue with Permalinks, 404 (Page Not Found) Error #74443

    Hello Devin

    yes, I’ve concluded that the problem is not to do with the query either; in which case, I’ve completely run out of ideas as to how I can get custom permalinks to work. I appreciate that this is not a theme issue – and I don’t want to take up your time by asking about non-theme issues – but any suggestions as to how I can escape default permalinks would be very gratefully received. Thanks a million.

    in reply to: Issue with Permalinks, 404 (Page Not Found) Error #74441

    I’ve boiled down my problem to ‘custom permalinks causing pagination to fail’.

    The problem goes like this:

    Pagination only works when permalinks are set to Default and page URL looks like this: http://golovegreece.com/?paged=2.

    Pagination doesn’t work (goes to 404 error page) when permalinks are customised and page URL looks like this: http://golovegreece.com/page/2/

    I’ve googled and googled and asked a dozen questions in various support forums, but still no joy.

    However, I saw here (http://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/6343/wordpress-pagination-with-custom-post-type) a possible solution, referring to modifying the query code.

    I have no idea what ‘query code’ is, and I looked for it in all the theme and WP files, but couldn’t find it. It seems to go something like this:

    global $paged;

    global $wp_query;

    wp_reset_query();

    $per_page = get_option(‘posts_per_page’);

    $cat_cars = get_term_by(‘slug’, ‘cars’, ‘category’);

    $page_links_total = ceil($cat_cars->count / $per_page);

    $paged = (get_query_var(‘paged’)) ? get_query_var(‘paged’) : 1;

    So, my question is: could you tell me in which file I could find this query code. Thanks

    in reply to: Issue with Permalinks, 404 (Page Not Found) Error #74440

    Hello Devin. Thanks for getting back. I think you’re right and that it’s a WP not a theme issue. Navigation works fine with the theme in local host and when I tried with 2011 on external host, then I had the same problem with navigation links going to 404. Apologies that I keep bringing up issues – I’m a WP novice, still figuring it all out. The theme is great and I enjoy working with it.

    in reply to: Issue with Permalinks, 404 (Page Not Found) Error #74438

    Unfortunately, Ismael, that doesn’t do the trick. I’ve noticed now that the changing pages function doesn’t work anywhere and not just in the Search pages function; by which I mean the first page in any series of pages will show correctly, but any subsequent pages will show as Error 404. Thus, if you go to the Home Page of my site – http://golovegreece.com/ – and try in bottom left corner of blog to go to page 2, an Error 404 page will appear. The URL for the error page is: http://golovegreece.com/page/2/. Only in Permalink>Default does changing pages work, with the URL showing in the case of the Home Page as: http://golovegreece.com/?paged=2.

    This is a big problem, and I’d really appreciate a solution, if it’s a theme issue.

    Thanks

    Perfect. Thanks for the great support.

    in reply to: How do I get slider to cope with lots of media? #71910

    When you say place // in front of code sections, where exactly do you mean? Currently, the code reads:

    //activates the prettyphoto lightbox

    if(jQuery.fn.avia_activate_lightbox)

    jQuery(‘body’).avia_activate_lightbox();

    so where would the extra // go.

    I’ve tried putting // in different places, but to no avail.

    Thanks

    in reply to: How do I get slider to cope with lots of media? #71908

    Thanks Peter; this seems to do the trick. However, can I ask one more question. Since I’m not that familiar with code, what is the best way to delete this code? Do I just cut it from the file altogether – which would lose the code for good – or is there a way just to disable the code, and if there is a way to disable the code, is this done in the avia/js file or in custom.css?

    Apologies for continuing to hassle you with questions, but I’m completely new to this. Help is greatly appreciated.

    in reply to: How do I get slider to cope with lots of media? #71906

    After some more discussion with the VideoGall plugin author, we’ve pretty much concluded that the most likely reason for his plugin getting the message described above is because the plugin clashes with the inbuilt lightbox plugin contained in the Shoutbox theme. Therefore, the question becomes, is there a way to disable the lightbox feature in the slider? An answer to this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    in reply to: How do I get slider to cope with lots of media? #71905

    I haven’t provided a link for you to see exactly what I’m on about. Here it is: http://golovegreece.com/rhodes/

    Thanks

    in reply to: How do I get slider to cope with lots of media? #71904

    Update: I’ve been in touch with the VideoGall plugin author and he suggested that his plugin was clashing with another media plugin with a lightbox I might have uploaded. But I’d thought of that and deactivated all my other media plugins, so that the only other media player I had working is the one with the theme. Is it possible that the VideoGall plugin clashes with the theme media player? Would all external media players have the same problem? Is there a way to play videos in theme posts? Here’s what the plugin author wrote to me:

    ‘Aahh .. figured out your problem. You have another lightbox kind of plugin which is clashing with the videogall plugin. Your video thumbnail images are using that lightbox plugin to open and hence throwing that error message.

    Disable that lightbox plugin and you won’t see that message again. Otherwise figure out a way to make sure that the video thumbnail images do not open in that lightbox plugin.’

    in reply to: How do I get slider to cope with lots of media? #71903

    I’ve been trying to resolve this myself with plugins – what I want is to get a video gallery in each post – but, frustratingly, the plugins I’ve been trying seem to conflict with the theme. The Laboreal Video Gallery plugin knocks out the Shoutbox Feature Slider, while the VideoGall plugin brings up the following message when you try and play a video in the gallery: “Image cannot be loaded. Make sure the path is correct and image exist.”

    I don’t know if what’s going on is a theme or plugin issue. Any similar issues in the past? All I want is to use a simple video gallery in each post. Doesn’t seem too much to ask. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    in reply to: MAMP issues #70375

    I think I’ve figured out what the problem was with loading the theme in local host with a lot of posts in the Features Sliders. It’s to do with a plug-in – specifically the WP-typography plug in. When I deactivated this plug in, the blog was loading fine again! I’ll give it a couple of days to see it wasn’t a fluke, but I had problems with this plug in on the external site – it slowed everything down – which was resolved by deactivating the plug-in. In fact, I noticed that the plug-in author knows the plug-in slows everything down and recommends only using it with another plug in– WP Super Cache.

    in reply to: MAMP issues #70371

    I was using the free version of MAMP, which is why I wasn’t able to manage the changes you suggest. However, even after I set up MAMP Pro on trial and did go through your suggestions – increased memory, ticked permissions boxes – still having problems loading posts in slider. It’ll display up to 52 posts, but anything more than that, it won’t load and the blog is just black. I’ve tried fiddling about with posts to see if it’s a corrupt post, but it doesn’t seem to be one or two posts throwing a spanner in the works; it’s the volume of posts it doesn’t seem to like. It’s not the end of the world; it just means I can’t use the theme on local host and test it there and I’ll have to build up the website online – unless anyone knows another way. A test site would have been nice.

    Thanks for the help.

    in reply to: MAMP issues #70369

    Hello Rumblefish

    Regarding your first point about MAMP, it is a likely culprit for not loading the theme properly, but can you be a little bit more specific as to where in MAMP I can manage the changes you suggest.

    Second, I did have real problems migrating the site from local to external host – with links referring back to local host and no header – tried a million solutions before realising it was to do, as you say, with the URLs not migrating and staying in local host. I came across the tool you suggest, but there is also a plug in I found in the WP Dashboard that does the same thing – called Search and Replace – and this seemed to work.

    Hello again.

    Devin was right. Now that I’ve gone live with the site – http://golovegreece.com – the issue I was having with posts not loading on the slider seems to have fixed itself, which is good. However, it’s a pity that I can’t use the theme offline to build it up before making it live. At the moment, it’s only about 10 percent ready. Does this mean I’m going to have to work on it while having it online or is there something else I can do? Thanks

    in reply to: Front page disappeared, turned to black #68911

    Thanks Devin. I think I understand what I have to do my end and will try to do so and get back to you once it’s done.

    in reply to: Front page disappeared, turned to black #68909

    Hello Ismael

    I’ve currently got the site going on local host using MAMP. Don’t know what staging server is? I’m new to this. So, if you could explain to me how I can get my site from local host to a staging server, I’d be more than happy to do this.

    Thanks

    in reply to: Front page disappeared, turned to black #68907

    I still need some suggestions to help me resolve this pretty catastrophic problem with the theme. Please help! Just to add that I’ve tried loading the front page in different browsers, but still nothing – header, menu and the rest is black.

    in reply to: Front page disappeared, turned to black #68906

    Just to confirm what’s happening: I’ve loaded 55 posts into the Featured Post Slider. So far, I haven’t added any media – photos or video – just text. On loading the front page, while the header and menu is visible the rest of the page is black – including blog, sidebar and footer. If I turn one or two of the posts to draft, then the home page loads, but when I try publishing posts again, then the problem with the black screen re-occurs. Help! This is a major problem!

    in reply to: Front page disappeared, turned to black #68905

    Hello Peter. I don’t understand what you want me to do. Like I said, I’m working on the theme on local host, so the site is not online yet. Is there another way to get the link/sample page to you? Please instruct. Thanks.

    in reply to: Front page disappeared, turned to black #68903

    This seems to be an issue with the Featured Post Slider. I retraced my steps, removed the 10 or so posts I’d added to the Featured Post Slider earlier today and the home page came back. However, when I tried to re-post the posts, after six or seven the home page stopped loading again. It’s not a corrupted individual post because it seems sometimes an individual post will load, at another time it won’t. Makes no sense.

    I’ve set the Featured Post Slider to accept 90 posts – I’ve done this on both the Theme Options and Theme Builder – and so far I’ve added about 60 posts without media, so it can’t be that I’m overloading the Slider.

    in reply to: Front page disappeared, turned to black #68902

    Just to add: I have tried applying different themes to my site and they all seem to be working no problem and are able to access the home page. It’s only with Shoutbox that I seem to have lost the home page.

    in reply to: Horrible hyphens at end of lines #67841

    Okay. I figured it out. It wasn’t a theme issue. It was a WP issue, which I resolved in wp-typography in the Dashboard. Sorry for wasting your time.
