Many thanks for looking into this for me.
After preparing a screen dump from both Chrome and Firefox, and putting them side by side, I could see there was a width issue in Chrome (it was smaller in width). I even swapped over my hacked css for the css that comes with the original Avisio download to see if that was the issue.
The answer: Chrome browser was set to 90% display size (CTRL+Middle Mouse Wheel would have been the culprit)
I can only apologise for wasting your time. I had tried everything before posting the query.

After playing around with the css and changing some of the php files, here’s my entry (using the Avisio theme):
I’ve just purchased the Avisio theme and have installed the latest version of prettyPhoto.
You are ok when inserting your own images into a post as you can insert your own alt tags (and linking it with the rel=”lightbox[grouped]). But yes, the featured image doesn’t call the alt description (alt=””).
Hope this will be updated.
