Hi colorit2,

The actually URL doesn't change anything within the page to allow us to style a link. The issue is wordpress doesn't actually recognize certain child type items so the code for the menu doesn't have anything it saying "the current page is a child of this link".

Its something often asked about but is a shortcoming of wordpress and without seeing a site live we are usually unable to help with any kind of styling as there are somethings little tricks/hacks we can do to fake the effect.

Regards,

Unfortunately my site isn't yet ready to go online.

In main navigation it's this:

"Acrylmalerei" is a subpage, created with template builder; it includes some elements and a section with portfolio overview, too.
For this "Acrylmalerei" page the highlighting works.

When I click on such a portfolio single item of this overview, then the highlighting is gone; however the URL of this is then:

http://studio.viaina.de/portfoliomalerei/acrylbild-nr-1/

Guess, this is, what you mean?
"portfoliomalerei" is the slug, created in theme options --> portfolio for the portfolio items.

You mean, I need to put anything else in main navigation, so that the single portfolio entries can be highlighted in main navi, too?

Is the portfolio single entry part of your navigation? Can you post a link please? It's possible to highlight single entries and portfolio categories however it's not possible to highlight a "portfolio page" when you're on a portfolio single entry because wp can't determine if the current single entry is assigned to a portfolio page or not.

Hi,

everywhere at my site, when I'm at a post or page, the corresponding main navigation point is highlighted (active link colour) - but on portfolio single item pages, there's nothing in the main menu highlighted.

How can I solve this?
Thanks.

Hi designkolchose,

Ah ok, that is a little bit easier than the sub-menu. Try adding the following CSS to your Quick CSS (located under the Styling Tab in the theme options) or the custom.css file in the css folder of your theme files:

#top #wrap_all .current_page_item > a {
color: #555;
}

Hi designkolchose,

It depends on how you have the sub-menu set up. If you have the Woo Commerce sub menu (log in, cart, checkout) then try adding the following CSS to your Quick CSS (located under the Styling Tab in the theme options) or the custom.css file in the css folder of your theme files:

#top.woocommerce-account li.login_link a {
color: #333;
}
#top.woocommerce-cart li.shopping_cart_link a {
color: #333;
}
#top.woocommerce-checkout li.checkout_link a {
color: #333;
}

Each of the colors can be customized how you want them using hex color codes: http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_colors.asp

If you have a custom menu, I think I'll need to see a link to your site so I can make sure the css is targeted to your site :)

Regards,

Hi,

I think what Devin meant is that we would need to see a live example of this to test for ourselves. Or if you're not comfortable with posting a link you can copy the HTML that WordPress generates as well as any custom CSS.

Based on what you're describing my guess is that the code in your functions.php is breaking on the last link. By that I mean when you click on the last link then another link the the current-menu-item is still listed as a class name for that last link.

Regards,

Dude, I have added your initial CSS code to custom.css in order to change the active link color but it's not working for me. I tested in a different browser to be sure it's not a cache thing... but the active link is still showing as the secondary color.

Would you take a look to see what I might be missing?

The site is at: http://liga.ca/

Thanks!

Thanks, but what do you mean with "custom menu"?

I already have two menu made with the menu manager:

http://i39.tinypic.com/2jb70ht.jpg

and this is the head of my site (still offline):

http://i42.tinypic.com/b7xglv.jpg

I've used your code above, but it doesn't work. Have I misunderstood something?

You can try:

.submenu .menu li.current_page_item a, .submenu .menu li.current_page_item a:hover{
color:#d59cb4 !important;
text-decoration: underline;
}

.submenu .menu li a:hover{
color:#d59cb4 !important;
text-decoration: underline;
}

.submenu .menu li.current-menu-parent a, .submenu .menu li.current-menu-parent a:hover{
color:#d59cb4 !important;
text-decoration: underline;
}

however this solution requires a "custom menu" (you can build it with the menu manager - Appearance > Menus).

Thanks, Chris, this worked; but I added there an additional question concerning the active link color to the submenu, if you could please take a look there:

Hi,

this code works fine. But I need this for the submenu, too.

Screenshot of my site:
http://i41.tinypic.com/dmp9gp.jpg

I have tried this CSS without success:

#header .submenu a:active {
color:#d59cb4 !important;
text-decoration: underline;
}

and alternatively this

.submenu .menu li a:active {
color:#d59cb4 !important;
}

None of them is working. I would like to have an active link color, when I am at one of these subpages from this submenu.

Hovering is working with this:

#header .submenu a:hover{
color:#f2f6fa;
text-decoration: underline;
}

but I don't get it to work with the active link color.

Could someone help me please? Thanks a lot!

Hi Chris,

my site is still in maintenance mode, so I provide a screenshot with some descriptions in it.
Concerning these active link colors my site behaves exactly as your demo site does (http://www.kriesi.at/themes/corona/):

there is also only "Home" highlighted with the active link color, when you are at the "Home" page, as well as the other 5 main navigation items behaves.

But as soon as you are on a subpage of these main menu items, its main menu item (as a parent) is no longer highlighted.

Here a screenshot of my site with some descriptions:

http://i39.tinypic.com/2gt5l3l.jpg

I've changed the color in the code, that you had mentioned above, but this has no effect at all::

.widget_nav_menu .current-menu-item>a, .widget_nav_menu .current_page_item>a{<br />
color:#00FF72;
}

Hey,

sorry for the delay. I lost the link to your site again, could you link me?
All I can tell is that in the page you link it's a menu widget - the active color can be defined in your theme css - in the preview it's minimal-skin.css on this line:

.widget_nav_menu .current-menu-item > a, .widget_nav_menu .current_page_item > a

Really nobody an idea??

I would like to have the active link color for the main page, when being active at a subpage of it.

Example:

http://www.kriesi.at/themes/corona/templates/page-sidebar-left/

In the main navigation no link is in the active link color (coloured). In this example the main navigation link "Templates" - as the parent site of this subpage - should have the active link color.
