Yes, in the slideshow editor for that portfolio item just click on the icon of the movie reel (after inserting the link to your video). A window will appear that allows you to set the thumbnail for the video.

That way the link will go directly to Youtube, out of my site. I would like to replace only the thumbnail not the behavior of portfolio, the ajax box works ok.

Is there any way to replace portfolio video thumbnails (linked from Youtube) for custom images? My site is http://puntomov.com/nuevo/

I know I could replace these thumbnails directly in Youtube, but I have produced videos in 4:3 and 16:9 and their aspect can't be chaged in this way.

Thanks

The thumbnails are not centered on the demo site. Look at the balloon. All the thumbnails align to the left.

No worries, I stripped out the featured function and used the same effect as the link I posted that does center the thumbnails.

Hi azimpact,

You can check the demo site: http://www.kriesi.at/themes/newscast/

As you can see in the demo site, if the mouse is not hovered on the accordion thumbnails, by default those thumbnails/images are centered. Can you post a link to your site? so we can check it further.

Not the approach I'm looking for.

I want them centered like this does :http://humanreconstruction.com/

In fact, when I bought this theme I thought I was getting that one. My fault for not paying attention. Won't happen again.

I'm stripping out this themes accordion and am going to add that themes which uses kwicks.

Not the ideal approach since the theme won't center thumbnails and I can't get a refund, I really have no choice.

Thanks.

Hi,

I wrote a lengthy answer below, but after re-reading your post a number of times i am no longer certain what it is that you are asking. Please look at the demo site http://www.kriesi.at/themes/newscast/ , and run your mouse over the images in the accordion (i am guessing by your last sentence that is what you were talking about? though i am not sure where thumbnail comes into play).

Plan A) *the easy way* Using FTP , find the image in the folder on your server that you do not like, and replace it with an image that you like which you already cropped, resized yourself using photoshop., replacing the old with the new.

Warning: Algebra, Formulas Ahead

[I hope your Algebra/Geometry teachers used to tell the class ; 'Why can't you all be as smart as ____(fill in your name)]

Plan B)
Always upload images bigger than the size you want those images to shrink down to. So if you are uploading images whose thumbnails you want to be 700 x 320 , then both the width of the image you upload must be bigger then 720 and the height of the image you upload must be bigger then 320. *BUT* the aspect ratio of the image you upload *must* also be identical to the aspect ratio you want your thumbnail to be. This would require for you to use photoshop or a similar program to make sure that you resize or crop if necessary the image.

You can use the standard proportion formula to plug in the number and solve for x (or use a calculator online ). You need the height and width of your ideal size (what you want the image you upload to become). And you need either the height or the width of your current image you will be uploading. After you enter those 3 numbers into the formula, and solve, it will give you the size of the width or height your current image needs to get cropped to in order to be proportional to the perfecrt/ideal image and not get cropped by Wordpress.

The Math: Proportions

(get the pocket protector out and put on the bifocals)

You will first need to figure out how to crop /resize your image in order to make it proportional to your perfect sized image prior to upload (remember it must be bigger) , so you will need to pick either height or width (up to you) that will be cropped.

perfect height / perfect width = current height of image i will upload (no crop) / X (what my width should be cropped to)
or
perfect height / perfect width = X (what my height should be cropped to) / current width of image i will upload (no crop)

Example Exercise 1: Algebra use in Real World

Your image before upload is 490x200 and you want the thumbnail (ideal size) to be 100x50. You dont want to crop the 200 (height) but are ok to crop some of the 490 (width) and are not sure how much needs to be removed so your image becomes proportional:

(100/50) = (x/200) is (100*200)/50 = 400 ;;; an image 100x50 is proportional to an image 400x200 so if your image is 490x200, you must remove 90 pixels from the height, or wordpress will do it for you. (Of course since you are removing the height yourself you can remove 20 from the top and 70 from the bottom or whichever way makes the most sense).

If x is identical to the size of your image that you left out after you solved, then your image is already proportional to the ideal size and you should do nothing but upload it..

Class dismissed, and don't forget to read pages 34 to 190 for a surprise quiz tomorrow.

Thanks,

Nick

I've found some posts about this over a year old and am wondering if I am missing something obvious.

Is there a way center the thumbnail so that more of the image is shown prior to them mousing over it to see the full image?

Right now, it shows everything starting from the left side so there is not a lot of image showing in thumbnail.

kwicks accordion js does it so I'm sure it can be done, I just can't figure out how.

We ran into the same problem with their Angular theme. They're using WP's oEmbed, which will let you add a max width and height (http://codex.wordpress.org/Embeds#Okay.2C_So_What_Sites_Can_I_Embed_From.3F). So, you can try updating line 268 of helper-slideshow.php to [embed width="123" height="456"]...[/embed]. We tried it but it's not yet working.

So for those of you who like duct-tape, open /css/slideshow.css, comment out height:340px and add a max-height: to whatever you need to get rid of the letter-box. We used 401px for super-widescreen video aspect ratios (given that the max-width is 930px).

As @dude says, it has a lot to do with the aspect ratio the video was shot in. There's got to be a javascript somewhere that's calculating a ratio of 16:9 (common, but not the only standard) and adding it to the

element style. I'll let the Kriesi guys figure out where that is.

Still no help............

No idea how to fix it myself, nothing in the Style.css changes the height of the video, just the position on the page.

Please get on to this, the theme is awesome but this is a big glitch for anyone looking to put YouTube videos on their site who buys this theme.

I think we've had one similiar report in the past. The embed object has the right size and isn't cropped (no css code, etc. resizes the video) so the content inside the flash object is only influenced by youtube. Maybe it depends on the aspect ratio of the video if black bars appear (youtube supports 16:9 only) or not. I'll ask Kriesi to look into it. Maybe he finds something....

I still think it's something wrong with the slider code.

Here is regular embed code in a text section. The video has no black side bars when played: http://www.propertyvideolisting.co.uk/

Here is the same YouTube video (not using embed code) in your slider: http://www.propertyvideolisting.co.uk/2011/10/05/22-new-wynd-montrose/

The sliders height is too short and that is causing the video to scale in and show the black bars at the side.

I am having difficulty getting the YouTube videos in the sliders to scale property. When you press play, black bars appear down the side and I can't find out where to adjust the height of the video to fill it.

Here is the site: http://www.propertyvideolisting.co.uk/

Hey,

1.) The aspect ratio of images can only be adjusted by modifying the sizes of images generated in functions.php. Bear in mind that if you change the image sizes, this only affects images uploaded from that point onwards (ie existing images will use their existing sizes).

2.) The only way to avoid this problem is to create images larger than or equal to the largest image size set in functions.php and upload them from there.

Hi, a couple questions regarding the slider:

1. In the case of images smaller than the slider, how do I maintain aspect ratio?

Currently images are stretched sideways, I need them enlarged to fill as much of the slider as possible without changing the aspect ratio. Obviously image quality may not be the best but that is acceptable, the distortion caused by this stretching, however, is something I really need to avoid.

2. When images load that there is a "tiling" effect during transition, again when the images in question are smaller than the slider. How can this best be avoided?

Thank you!
