Devin,

Here's a link to a file that has all the changes we have made to the 'standard' Angular code (.rtf with yellow highlights on what was changed). You will see that we really didn't change that much.

May y'all can take a quick look to determine if you see something that can solve the 'flashing' problem we have.

Hi mbesh,

You can post it to something like http://pastebin.com/ and put a link here. But as I tried to explain before, we really are not capable of digging in to a single issue like this and completely debugging it. You will need to look into a freelance developer to actually debug and fix this issue as the depth involved is just too great for what we can do via support.

If we could duplicate the error on our end with a clean install of the theme that would be on us, but as is it stands this is a singular issue that is only happening on this specific installation.

If Kriesi has any other Ideas he will post them on your flagged topic but once things start getting heavily customized and there are multiple plugins involved the amount of variables and time needed gets a bit much.

Regards,

I have a text file to give you that might help you two/Kriesi solve the drop-down menu 'flashing' problem on our site.

It has a list of all of the plugins we are running, and all of the code changes all of you had us make to the original Angular files in the past few months.

How do I get it to you?

Hey Mark,

Honestly I have no idea what is causing it or even what to do as far as a solution. We can't work from the same base files anymore because of the customization and I can't say for sure if its an issue that has been fixed, if its a customization you have made or what.

In this instance it just may not be something we can really "solve" for you. In normal controlled settings the issue isn't able to be replicated in the same way its happening on your site so it means the troubleshooting is just taking blind guesses.

I'm going to close the topic for now and mark it for Kriesi to get a final look over.

Regards,

Nick,

We may have found the problem.

To test if the "cross-domain" issue was a problem with WPEngine, we decided to copy our entire current 'live' site (on WPEngine servers) to our original development servers (on GoDaddy) to determine if the problem is WPEngine. [ Note: This site is 3 months old and only has one 'landing page' working on the Home Page ("Internet") and has very few portfolio items: http://visualimpact.us/wordpress/ ].

Well, this site was still on 3.4.2, so to make them 'exact', the first thing we did was to upgrade to 3.5.1---the drop-down menu 'flashed' right away! (This site did not 'flash' when it was on 3.4.2).

[ FYI: Because of the extensive custom changes we've made to a lot of theme files, we have stayed at version 1.5 of Angular (2/12/13) ].

Maybe this info might help y'all with solving this.

Thanks,
Mark

Nick,

If we knew it only happen to 1%-2% of visitors, we wouldn't worry about it, but we are seeing 100% of "PC's" are having the problem (doesn't say too much about our web site development "expertise" if our site doesn't work properly).

I'm not sure if it's an "American thing", but every "PC" computer I view our web site on does the 'flash' (IE8/9, Firefox, Chrome, Safari)---and on computers that have never viewed our site before (a few different public libraries, other companies in our building, friends, etc.).

I get it to happen after the home page 'loads' completely, and just click on our logo---it will 'flash'.

Hi,

Right now I can only replicate this under the most un-natural conditions and using IE-10. I would have to click reload for example and quickly position the mouse in the location where the word 'About' is on the menu, so when the page starts to load , the menu opens and then closes and re-opens , but this is all taking place while the content is still loading. When the content finishes loading, I am unable to force the menu or the button to do that again. I am sorry but I looked through everything I have (except Android, which I don''t own).

I think another team member has an Android I hope , but I will look now for an emulator since I wanted to get that anyhow for testing. So hang in there, if that little flicker is the problem that affects 1%-2% of visitors and takes place during page load and not after,... Well I will also run a javascript profile to see if something jumps out

I just looked to compare your theme to the original, especially the menu area, and I see a lot of difference in location, and position. I am wondering if perhaps something went rogue because the correct selectors are no longer found by jquery or are found but no longer carrying the functionality of the original.

Thanks,

Nick,

We put the entire 'first' file with the addition of the "CORS" stuff starting at line 30, into the .htaccess file of a "staging" site on WPEngine servers (which they say is totally "outside" of their 'system', and has no "cross-domain" issues), and the drop-down menu is still 'flashing'. [The "staging" site is an exact 'copy' of the 'production' site].

They say that they have not seen this issue on any other of the sites they host.

We're in the "middle" of all this---we just want it to work properly.

Hi,

Please add this entire file into htaccess before anything from Wordpress http://pastebin.com/ERMLzg4L .. I modified the html5 boilerplate rules , (just removed a few that have nothing to do with wordpress). It may crash your site if your Apache doesn't have the modules activated , though it shouldn't. In case of a crash be prepared to ftp and replace the .htaccess file with the original. At that point, start adding the blocks one at a time until at some point you hit the block that your server rejects. Simply skip it and keep adding until you reach the end of the file. This will add zip, and expirations, and mime types and lot of other goodies that will make your sites faster.

I took out CORS automatically (sorry about that, so its not in the URL above, but you can add this block below on line 30 of the file referenced by the above url

# ----------------------------------------------------------------------
# Cross-domain AJAX requests
# ----------------------------------------------------------------------

# Serve cross-domain ajax requests, disabled by default.

  </IfModule>

`
(I took out the # (pound sign) from 3 lines, which activates the code.

Thanks,

Nick,

We did create a "completely separate" (no "dual-domains") "STAGING SITE" on a WPEngine---and it did the same thing:
http://visualimpact.staging.wpengine.com/

So, I guess that 'verified' what you are saying.

Now, forgive me if I'm a bit 'slow' (just remember we "designers"), is the following that we found on "Github" what you want us to add to the htaccess file?:

https://github.com/cgunther/php-boilerplate/blob/master/.htaccess.sample

# ----------------------------------------------------------------------
# Cross-domain AJAX requests
# ----------------------------------------------------------------------

# Serve cross-domain ajax requests, disabled by default.
# enable-cors.org
# code.google.com/p/html5security/wiki/CrossOriginRequestSecurity

# <IfModule mod_headers.c>
# Header set Access-Control-Allow-Origin "*"
# </IfModule>

If so, is this all we need? Does it matter where we put it in the htaccess?

Hi,

Just to make sure , I recorded via a US proxy this time. Technology started getting better where I am finally now that there are no more telegraph modems. Now that was slow! :) Once they get mail delivery started next year , this place will truly be a part of the global pony express system. Joking. Just not about the mail. I am from NYC. Just not living there for the moment.

WPEngine is a good host, and this issue is only on your subdomain. It's a security feature to prevent the execution of ajax originating from a different domain (CSRF attacks). https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/HTTP/Access_control_CORS?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=HTTP_access_control You can fix it up by setting CORS in your htaccess file. (see html5 boilerplate .htaccess file for example code)

Here is a video I made to show you: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8hqGBMSfHtKZnEwei0zYlpWU1k/edit?usp=sharing

(Please notice the behavior of the dropdown menu in Firefox).

Thanks,

Nick

Nick,

We are not having any image problems here in the US. I have talked with many dozens of people in the past week, and no one has had any images issues---just the 'flashing' menu.

I will send your screen grab to our hoster ("WPEngine"), and find out what they say.

Hi,

You have some kind of a serious server issue. Because all of a sudden for me, none of the portfolio thumbnail images load , there are jquery errrors, and the menu loads fully open and doesn't close. Other times it closes but thumbs don't load.

http://i.imgur.com/iN79D2X.png

Ok I think I see what is going on here. You are mixing two URLs for your website : visualimpactsystems.com and visualimpact.wpengine.com .. This is causing a problem if you look at the type of errors being thrown. Are your thumbnail images loading?

Thanks,

Nick,

Here's a "Screen-o-matic" using IE9 on a 3 year old Dell netbook (not very powerful):
http://www.4vis.com/MenuFlashExample-IE9.mp4

(I'm assuming Screen-o-matic was taking up a lot of memory while recording---this does not happen normally, and the 'flash' is a bit quicker)

Note: With Firefox, Chrome, and Safari, the 'flash' also happens loading the home page.

Hi,

Please record this event because I am unable to see it. The dropdown doesn't popup or me on Windows7 using any browser.

http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/ This website will let you record videos of your screen for free and post them online. Please record the event in question because i have a feeling it is caused by your mouse moving off the button.

Hi Mark,

Sorry if I sounded harsh, I didn't mean to. Its just I worked in a few shops before that had this anti-Windows feel about them, and though I don't like Windows not am a cheerleader for Microsoft, I look at the enduser OS (no matter how wrong their choice may be) as an important aspect of my job. I am no evangelist for Gates, but its important to have machines available to test the end result in a way that's meaningful. I am sorry if my concern came out in a negative way, so please look at my intent to help which may have come out a tad too strong.

Thanks,

Nick,

I don't know why you got that impression, but we don't feel that way. We are a full-service "multimedia" firm that needs to impress our prospects that we know what we're 'talking' about, by showing them high-quality work---especially our own web site.

I have just been tell you exactly what has been happening---that, for whatever reason, this 'flash appearing' of the "ABOUT US" drop down menu only happens on the PC and Android devices here in Michigan, USA. I have been 'concerned' about this because most of the people that will be looking at our site will be on a PC.

I went to the public library and a couple of friends to be sure that it wasn't somehow a problem with our PC, network, or Internet service.

Yes, it's been a bit frustrating, since I am telling you that something is happening and, for whatever reason, you cannot see it---that's why I sent a video of it happening (at the top of this post).

In regards to your video, you have to click on one of the 'portfolio items' on the home page (like "Internet") to be taken to another 'page'---that's when the 'flash appearing' happens.

[ Note: It happened on an older G5 Mac (2006) using Safari 5 and Firefox 3.6 for the initial 'load' of the home page, but didn't do it on going to other pages, like it does on PCs ].

I REALLY DO APPRECIATE all the effort you all have been spending on this. Hopefully, we can solve this 'dilemma'.

Regards,
Mark

Hi,

I am sorry, you are making it sound as if you work for a proper corporation and that even the library Windows XP terminal is showing you this to be broken. If that is the case, you need to speak to the Director of IT to fix the configuration, because I don't own an iMac and everything looks fine on my Windows 7 (two boxes i checked with, and one is a Windows Inspiron Dell notebook 2 months old).

Your company sounds very adverse to Windows based systems but unfortunately that is the OS the visitors will be using. Please inform upper management to make an investment into 2 proper windows terminals for Q/A.

From my end all looks well, so maybe don't show anything to the client through your windows boxes that must be improperly configed.

Devin,

Very weird---and we are launching tomorrow (3.13.13). [Here in the US at 10AM EST].

I went to our local "library," which had a basic Dell with "XP" and supposedly the 'standard load', and the "ABOUT US" drop down menu appears for about 1/4 second EVERY TIME I go to a different page.

Any "hail mary" you can think of right now?

Hi Mark,

I'm not getting on my end either. If you have any plugins active you could try deactivating them in case some javascript is causing the temporary opening of the menu under certain circumstances.

Not quite sure what else it could be but if it isn't overly detrimental to the site it may be something to put aside unless it can be re-created consistently and you can pinpoint what causes it to happen.

Regards,
