Any updates on allowing captions to prettyPhoto? It looks like the default WordPress Gallery shows the captions, but the short code galleries don't show captions.

Thanks,

Hi Dude,
thanks for reply.

Ok now it works (check the same link, new dummy image content upload).

Strange problem by the way. The files were and are linked to the media file, but I had to update manually the images selected in the gallery to have the right result.

Anyway. Thank you for support. For me the problem looks solved.

The images link to the attachment page (similiar to a "post") and not to the fullsize image file (jpg file). If you want to use the lightbox you need to link them to the file itself:

Hi,

I thought your site is about people interested in having affairs. Must say after reading a few articles, I was disappointed. :)

Devin is right, don't bother with the technical stuff, unless you really want to know than you need to start from the foundation.

Not sure if you want an answer to your questions unless you are technical, in that case your best bet is to read (google for) "Optimizing the resource-updating period behavior of HTTP cache servers for better scalability" by IEEE or Google's "Dynamically allocated secondary browser cache" the second chapter of section thirty or the thirtieth chapter of the second section. Can't remember but good reading.... ughhhh, at least there won't be an exam for you.

Thanks,

Fixed it. Turns out I had "Prevent caching of objects after settings change" enabled in W3 Total Cache in the Browser Cache>General settings. Disabling it fixed lightbox for some reason.

I would like to understand how that affects prettyPhoto for future reference - if you can take a moment to explain why that would be great.

Hi meanster99,

With the requirement to have 8 columns that is just about your only option.

The way I approach these issues is to decide what theme features I want to use and then try to adjust around that. With your requirements, I would say the current approach is probably the best though a bit cumbersome.

Another way would be to make each performer a single portfolio item and then add a category for every region you have in addition to male or female. So your categories would be the groups you wanted to show instead of just male/female and region; ex - Female Performers in London.

Then you just create a page showing that Female Performers in London category and each individual can be selected to display their 'profile' type information which is really just a single portfolio item.

It doesn't give you the 8 column grid, but its an alternative.

Regards,

Hi Nick,

Yes, I know I can add a caption to the gallery images that will show up as a tooltip when the thumbnail is hovered over. But I was wondering if I could have that same caption appear on the lightbox image that appears once you click on the thumbnail and also if that caption could appear permanently underneath each thumbnail (in addition to the tooltip).

Thanks,

I have some requirements for the gallery element and wonder if they are possible, and if so how:

1) Add a caption to the larger lightbox image when a thumbnail is clicked on a gallery.
2) Put a title or short descriptive text underneath each gallery thumbnail

Hi,

Please forgive my ignorance, but I'm struggling to achieve what I would like to do. Let me explain...

I have around 120 photos of our entertainment agency performers. They need to be split into one of 2 types, 'male performers' and 'female performers'. I also need the performers to be split into one of 8 geographical region (i.e. London, The South, The North, East Anglia, The Midlands, Wales, Scotland, Ireland).

I have been trying to use a combination of a portfolio and gallery to achieve this, but I must be misunderstanding which should be portfolio categories, which should be portfolio items and which to display using the layout builder gallery.

I want to ensure I do it the most efficient way, using the least amount of pages but without having too many images and therefore links on any one page (possibly affecting my seo). I want the final selection (for example, 'male performers in London', or 'female performers in London') to be displayed as an 8 column gallery (as I need to have captions with the perfomer name and details) that then uses the lightbox to display the fullsize image.

The nearest I got to what I wanted was to create 16 portfolio item pages (8 items, one for each area, for the males and 8 for the same areas for the females), with 2 portfolio categories as 'male performers' and 'female performers' and then create 2 ordinary pages (male performers, female performers) and have a portfolio item limited to its specific category. Each portfolio item page then contained a gallery of those performers.

This seems a really inefficient way of doing it, but I can't get my head around how best to organise it, or even if I understand the whole purpose of the portfolio items etc.

I also then had to add the code below to functions.php (as advised in a post about using multiple portfolios) just so they didn't interfere with each other (but I then lost the previous/next functionality with this code addition):

/*
* add multiple portfolio workaround m meaney
*/
add_filter('avia_post_nav_categories', 'use_same_category_filter');
function use_same_category_filter($same_category)
{
 $same_category = true;
 return $same_category;
}

Can anyone advise me, in a clear way, on how best to achieve what I want? Should I even think about using a separate plugin?

Hey Dude,
Thanks for all of the info. This is very disappointing because your theme is really cool and both my client and loved the layout. It also seemed that the images she plans to sell on the site could have easily been set up in a gallery, using the gallery management tool, and then those same images would go in the slideshow for the home page. It doesn't sound like your theme offers the functionality it portrays itself to be able to, so given that, how can I get a refund for my client? I cannot spend more time trying to figure out how to make this work for her and I clearly can't figure out the functionality of this theme to be able to use it properly, so I obviously cannot use it as intended when I purchased it for her. Thanks.

Hi,

try this

<img width="160" height="160" src="http://domain-name.com/url-to-image.png" alt="Image description" />

You can also download Simple Image Sizes plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/simple-image-sizes/ and change the size therer , just remember that after changing the size, only new images are affected, not the old ones without regenerating them

Thanks,

I'm sorry but what you try to accomplish is not possible - not only with our theme but probably any other WooCommerce theme won't work for you too.

1) Allow me to set up groups of images that will have names
Our theme does not support groups of images but you can attach/add images to entries (posts, portfolio entries, etc.). If you want to group images I'd use a gallery plugin like: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/nextgen-gallery/ - this plugin even enables you to display several groups of images on one page by using the gallery shortcode.

2) Allow those same images to appear in the home page as a combined slideshow
If you're using the nextgen gallery plugin you can use the shortcode to display the image galleries/groups on all pages - including the homepage.

3) Allow me to have those same images be the products for people to shop and purchase
That's not easily possible. You can sell digital products with WooCommerce but you need to re-upload all images (or pack them into zip files) because WooCommerce does not come with a Nextgen gallery integration and also the theme image slideshows/galleries can't be used as products. Basically you need to a) create a nextgen gallery which holds your preview thumbnails, etc. - you can embed this gallery anywhere on your website - even on the product page, homepage, etc. and b) you need to set up a digital product which points to the images/files you want to sell (images with high quality, etc.).

If you don't want to sell digital files/images/products you need to create a simple product (or variable product if you want to sell different photo sizes, etc.) - in this case you can use the gallery shortcode inside the product description to display the gallery above the "Add to cart" button.

4) Allow me to remove “recent comments”, “archives” and “categories” from the left sidebar; it will not let me edit any menus at all right now.
These widgets are dummy widgets. They'll disappear when you add a widget into the right sidebar area (Appearance > Widgets). If you want to remove them open up wp-content\themes\flashlight\sidebar-right.php and delete following code:

avia_dummy_widget(2);
 avia_dummy_widget(3);
 avia_dummy_widget(4);

Okay, so I am still stuck and getting more frustrated by the minute. I have already spent 3 full days trying to get this all to work and it’s still not working right, so this theme is not as easy as you guys claim it is, so I really need help here.

At your direction above, I created a portfolio page and named it Birds, uploading all of my images for that page. I selected “images” as my category for this page. I have then indicated that I want shop to be the parent to images. Nothing is showing up, and neither are any items in the portfolio when I go to look at my home page on the site. It’s not showing up like a portfolio page with 3 columns either like you gave me as an example above either.

I have read, re-read, watched and re-watched the video tutorials provided with the purchase of this theme. I feel like I have followed all of the directions to set up the site, but none of it’s working.

I currently have two groups of images uploaded as two separate portfolio entries as you indicated I should do, but they are not accessible when I view my home page or try to get to them by clicking on the menu items. Nothing is coming up under shop either.

I need this site to:
1) Allow me to set up groups of images that will have names
2) Allow those same images to appear in the home page as a combined slideshow
3) Allow me to have those same images be the products for people to shop and purchase
4) Allow me to remove “recent comments”, “archives” and “categories” from the left sidebar; it will not let me edit any menus at all right now.

Why have the gallery management tutorial (which I did earlier this morning) if that is not the way I should set up my images? Makes no sense, and for me, is just causing me serious confusion on how to set this site up.

I’ve been doing web design for some time, so part of my frustration is that I can’t get to work because of the conflicting way to set up the images.

I really would appreciate help here. The website is onceuponawallphotography.com. If you need more info on access to help me fix it, please let me know because I cannot keep spending fruitless time trying to get this working.

Thank you.
~Lisza

Hi liszadarling,

Its easiest if you work from the end of the process and this is all using the meta box under the visual editor and not adding images through the wordpress Add Media button .

Start by creating your individual portfolio items. These will be your groups of images under a single topic. So on each "portfolio item" page you can have lots of images but it would be one "item".

ex: http://www.kriesi.at/themes/flashlight/portfolio-item/classic-3/

Now that you have a portfolio item you can create a portfolio which is a group of the individual items showing only the first image from each portfolio item: http://www.kriesi.at/themes/flashlight/portfolio/

For each individual page you can also choose to have a specific background slideshow. Using the meta box under the visual editor add your slideshow images and then using the slideshow options choose background slider only to choose that specific slideshow as the background.

So whatever page you have defined as the homepage would need to have its individual slideshow defined on that page.

You can also set a default site-wide slideshow from the main theme options.

Regards,

Devin

Hi all,
I am confused between difference in adding images to "media" versus "portfolio". I am have uploaded a group of photos to media, but cannot get them to show up on the home page slider. I also need to keep them grouped under their own section and thought it would be easy enough to give them their own page, which would seem to be gallery, but this isn't coming together either. I want all of the images to show in the frontpage slider as well. Sounds simple enough but I am more lost than a girl scout without a compass! haha

What am I doing wrong? Would really appreciate any help. Thanks!

Hi,

Please change the code back to how it was originally.

Instead just use this shortcode, changing the number of images, and adding the ID numbers of all the images you want to include. You can get the ID numbers by going to the media library and hovering your mouse over the links of images

[gallery link="file" include="412,414,416,422,433" columns="4"]

Add this shortcode to your gallery page by changing the view from visual to text when you edit the page

I think both of your issues should be solved by the above step.

My iPad is not working at the moment (kids broke it) and I cant test it. But if you can make a screen cast to explain what you mean by menu doesn't scroll, I can try to figure it out.

In the Video I said 'have a good day, and that's not his account''. I was joking around and just made it look like it was.

Thanks,
