Hello,

I am currently using the Coalition theme and am running it as a basic theme. The site is fine for all resolutions except 800 x 600. When viewing at this resolution, the main text is cut off and there is no horizontal scroll bar at the bottom for viewers to be able to view the rest of the text. Approx. 160 px worth isn't visible. I am running on a Mac and have tried on Safari, Chrome and Firefox browsers, and none work. Any idea how I can make a horizontal scroll bar on the site? It isn't live yet, so unfortunately I can't send you the link to show you.

Thanks,
Sniddy

Thanks for the suggestions. I may download Firefox and Firebug and see if it helps alleviate any of the problems I've been having. I don't hope to be a coding expert by any means, but at least be able to customize a website to my particular needs.

Hi,

Have you tried Ismael's customization he suggested above?

Almost all developers today write their CSS code in Firebug. You work with notepad and a browser and as you are adding different styles you save them into notepad to keep them , refresh and keep going on until the design is complete. If you are looking for an automated program , there really is nothing magical but the closest thing that comes is Top Style 4.

For WordPress you would need to know php, jQuery, Ajax, dom, css3, html5 (and xhtml syntax ), sql, as well as functions and constants native to WordPress. Off-course it doesn't mean you have to be able to write anything, you just have to understand what is happening in each particular block or line of code, and to be able to find similar blocks online and swap them out. (even if that is oversimplifying it ). But most of what you see is php files, css files, and jQuery files.

There are tons of awesome free videos on YouTube. Don't bother using the youtube search, instead search through google and put constraints of videos at least 45 minutes long, and search for 'introduction to wordpress development', 'understanding wordpress' or 'wordpress theme customization' 'under the hood of wordpress'. there are some excellent instructional videos by people who can explain what to do in a more interesting and clear way than I ever could.

But open up a php file , when you run into something you don't know, ask the thousands of developers on http://stackexchange.com/ for free, or look it up in http://php.net or http://codex.wordpress.org/ . That's how everybody learns it one step at a time (hate to use that cliche but its true)

Thanks,

I've been using Google Chrome's built-in functionality, though it only goes so far in being useful to me as I need to brush up on my CSS. I know the changes I'm asking are quite a bit more complex than simple styling questions. ;]

With this theme in particular, what coding languages would you suggest I look into to get a better grasp of what exactly is happening behind the scenes?

Hi,

For making customization to your theme's CSS, we recommend that you install and get to know Firebug ( http://getfirebug.com/css ) and Google Chrome developer tools ( https://developers.google.com/chrome-developer-tools/docs/overview ) browser add-on. Firebug is a free web development tool that integrates into Firefox and Chrome browsers and assists in monitoring, debugging and editing of any website's CSS, HTML, DOM, and JavaScript files.

Once installed, this easy to follow video will show you the basics of Firebug – http://vimeo.com/20917974 and get you on your way to customizing your theme like a real pro. It's 5 minutes long, and by the end you will know how to style anything!

Thanks,

Hi merhardj,

Kindly add this code in your Quick CSS or custom.css:

.widget .seperator.extralight-border {
display: none;
}

This code removes the extralight-border on the sidebar widget.

Also, add this code in your Quick CSS or custom.css, to remove the line below each list item in the widget:

.widget li, .widget a {
border: 0;
}

or

.widget li, .widget a {
border: 0 !important;
}

The other problem, I'm unable to test it with a mobile device. Let me tag the rest of the team.

Hi there -

I've been messing with the CSS a bit to try and come up with an elegant solution for my website, and have been running into a few problems.

Namely, I can't find out how to remove the extralight-border for only the sidebar widget box. There are also weird dashes in front of the individual sidebar widget menu items that appear as boxes on mobile devices.

My other problem comes up when trying to style the .ajax-control above the portfolio. I want it to be aligned left with the element above it (the two columns), but given the dynamic nature of the theme, it looks weird on mobile devices and when the resolution changes. I was also curious if it were possible to change the order of the buttons (so the X appears first, sort of like OSX)

Any suggestions would be a great help.

page in question here: http://danmerhar.com/good-artists-borrow-great-artists-steal/

Hi,

Your best bet is to use a plugin that Ismael recommended. (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-retina-2x/) Niche functionality such as this is best left to plugins in my opinion to allow the operator (you) a better selection and faster updates than building this into the theme and limiting your choice.

Hi guys,

I've just installed the Sentence them and I love it - huge upgrade from my previous theme.

However, I'm really keen to support retina screens as my photographs and logo don't look so hot on them.

I was wondering whether support for this will be built into the theme, as it is with some themes, in which case I will wait.

If not, could Kriesi recommend a retina display plugin for use with the Sentence them? I don't want to mess up his beautiful work or my website! :)

Any help from the community appreciated too ... thanks!

Hi Katie,

Try changing the height and width in your functions.php for the portfolio from:

array('width'=>465, 'height'=>346);

to

HI Ismael - actually - I'm still having this problem - but this time in the root directory, I uploaded the site to the root directory (I was working in a subdirectory) and now the thumbnails are losing quality again. I used BackUp Buddy to move the site ( which didn't carry the images over properly) so I re-uploaded them, re-uploaded the amended functions.phph (just in case this helped) and regenerated the thumbnails with the plug in. The quality is still no ok. Can you suggest any other options?

This is a portfolio site so as you can image image quality is important!

Did you regenerate the thumbnails with: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/

You can try to switch the theme but probably this won't solve the issue because it's a wordpress core issue and thus affects all themes which rely on the standard wordpress thumbnail generation feature.

Hi Devin - I added the following to my functions.php

add_filter('jpeg_quality', function($arg){return 100;});

Then I got an error message so I removed it and added

function jpeg_quality_callback($arg)
{
return (int)100;
}

add_filter('jpeg_quality', 'jpeg_quality_callback');

The site works again but the quality hasn't increased. It's mostly the home page where I'm using the 2 column portfolio.They look fine on iPad.

I hope there's a solution soon - I may have to think about changing themes...

Hi Katie,

I'm getting a different error when I view the site now. Try re-installing wordpress and if that doesn't get the site back up delete the other theme files (including this one) from your wp-content>themes folder so that wordpress loads up the default one again. I'm not sure what is causing the error but it looks like maybe a file got edited in the wrong place or perhaps a plugin isn't playing nice with the theme/other plugins.

Regards,

Sorry to jump in here! I wanted to fix an image resolution issue, so I took your above piece of code to add to my functions.php and now I'm getting this error on my website (www.katienelsondesign.com)

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_FUNCTION in /home/katesi4/public_html/wp-content/themes/angular/functions.php on line 16

I tried taking the line out but I continue to get the error. Any help you have would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,
~Katie

Hi ShortieD,

You should be able to just add the first line to your functions.php file and then all further images uploaded will not be compressed.

If it causes any issues, you would add the second one. That should be it :)

Regards,

Hi Peter - I'm' gonna need a bit more guidance to work through the post you directed me to - according to the post - I'm supposed to amend the functions.php file with the following codes - what line do I amend as I can't find a "the_post_thumbnail" in my functions.php file

add_filter('jpeg_quality', function($arg){return 100;});

___________________

function jpeg_quality_callback($arg)
{
return (int)100;
}

add_filter('jpeg_quality', 'jpeg_quality_callback');

Hi!

You can try to increase the jpeg compression/quality value - see : http://www.skidoosh.co.uk/php/wordpress-jpeg-thumbnail-image-quality-setting-and-adjustment/

Regards,

Hi Ismael - I've just updated to a 1000px wide image with a 225kb size (which I think it too big). Have a look now, it's still blurry - do I need to save my images at a larger size? Won't this make my site load slower??
Thanks
