Hey,
it depends on the amount of unused plugins/themes. Basically I'd keep WP clean because it can save you a lot of time in the future. In addition you save hoster/web storage. Another point is that hackers could use unused plugin/theme files for attacks. I.e. if they're lucky they find scripts like the old timthumb.php file and the backdoor opens...

You can find several articles about this topic, one of them is: http://mydigitalinternet.com/2010/too-many-wordpress-plugins-can-slow-down-your-blog/

A general question...do the unused theme directories or unused plugins have any effects in slowing the speed of the site? Is there any benefit in deleting themes and plugins you are not using?

Thank you.

Yes, I'm sorry for that - it seems that some servers have problems to generate the config.xml.

Ok, I'll think about that. Makes it less user friendly though.

You can use config.xml instead of the slideshow image manager. As James suggested in another thread you can use W3Total Cache to decrease loading time.

Does anyone have any recommendations about how to speed up the Display theme? I'm using firebug and the dont_edit.php file takes a while to load, as well as whatever is being reported on the domain in general. I've got a cache plugin installed, which I hope is helping.

Any suggestions?
