Did you manage to ever get a more in-depth tutorial completed as requested from the original post?

I have read through the documentation of Brighbox, but I am a complete newbie and have no idea what portfolios are, what the difference is between categories and pages and how to get my website to look ~at least~ similar to the demos.
I tried to ~work with~ the dummy data, but then I couldn't get rid of it and keep the stuff I wanted and ended up resetting everything back and re-installing Brightbow...but I just sit and stare at it. ; )

I am hoping to have a front page, blog, articles for sale, about, etc. and I have no idea what I'm doing. Ack!

Is there anything that has screen captures of the various elements pointed out, like "This -----> is a portfolio." "This----> is where to change such and such." ???

Thank you!!!!!

Yeah. (Mostly) noob here, too.

I would have preferred the categories to be displayed like this ...
http://www.kriesi.at/themedemo/?theme=angular

Having them in closer proximity to the galleries makes more sense, IMO.

You can also set up sub-pages under a Portfolio page using menus.

Eureka! @dennkiel your video did the trick.

Here's what else I learned (which all seems obvious now):
• Under Portofolio Items "Add new" means "new portfolio entry" which is like a post. I thought maybe it meant new portfolio which confused me.
• The content area on this new entry is for text only. You designate the photos by uploading them to the item's Gallery area below.
• Before hitting Save, double check that you've chosen a gallery layout, like "flexible grid gallery." The default "background slider" shows nothing in the content area.

@Bokehman I'm going to try the Category widget in a sidebar just to see how that works. I didn't think I wanted a sidebar on my Home page, but we'll see.

THANKS so much for your help, guys. If only I'd had this "down 'n dirty" video before embarking on my highly frustrating journey yesterday. You should make the video a sticky post at the top of this forum.

More questions to come on other smaller topics....

Same here. I think the documentation needs to be expanded.

Not sure if this helps. I asked this about a week ago:
Can I set up folders in the portfolio section (ie. vacation, still-life, etc ...)?

And the answer was:
Not quite folders but you can organize by Categories. You can then add a Category widget to your sidebars to let people click on them and display everything under that category.

Hi Kelly!

I've been in trouble with the portfolio too! ;-)

Take a look at this screencast: http://www.screenr.com/ePCs
It's not for our theme, but it works the same way.
Don't search for it: you don't have the sorting option.

I know you've answered this before, but I am unable to follow the answers. In one frustrating thread, the guy was running into the same problems i am and then wrote, "Oh, I finally got it. Thanks" without sharing his epiphany. I figure if I start my own thread at least I can ask questions until I get it.

Like many, I want to have a main Portfolio page that has 4 images on it that when you click on each one you are taken to its corresponding gallery page. Right now via the menu I see my 4 dropdown gallery pages under my Portfolio main page, but I'd also like to have the main Portfolio page have 4 image buttons (a piece of art I made that is a representative photo with the gallery title on it) where someone could click on each one and be taken to its gallery (instead of what looks like just a single post page). This is what I seem to be seeing on the Demo Portfolio page—or am I seeing something different?

I cannot figure how to have the click-through go to the right place, except by uploading my four main images directly into the Portfolio page, and making sure their url clicks through to the corresponding gallery page. That doesn't look right, and judging by the demo it isn't. Then I tried uploading a bunch of items in a Portfolio category, with the button image being the last item, but no images showed up at all on my designated Portfolio page, even after choosing the category in the Portfolio Theme Options.

I guess I'm confused about Portfolios, items, and uploads and galleries. Is there one place I can go to read about all that? I would put a screenshot here of what result I'm looking for but don't see a way to do that. I've spent many hours on this now, getting close but then frustrated.

Thanks for any help.

The only solution I see here is to download the theme files again and re-upload them. You can use the wp-reset plugin to reset your installation. Your problem shouldn't occur when the theme hasn't been tampered with in combination with a clean and up-to-date wordpress installation.

Did you install any plugins? They might cause your theme to mess up somehow..
You can read through the included documentation file that comes standard with the theme, for portfolio setup info check part B4.

Hey,
1) I'll forward the video suggestions to Kriesi.

2) I'll search around - very likely I can find a notification plugin for bbpress. You can subscribe threads with the rss buttons for now.

3) You can use services like http://imageshack.us to upload screenshorts and http://mediafire.com to upload files. I really like the approach of this forum to not allow any uploads. It's always a security risk, causes traffic and storage problems and costs. It also increases loading times because you have to download additional scripts and resources to implement the upload functions or toolbars in general. Only a few user need this feature and they can use external services.

4) I don't like the idea of pn in support forums because:
a) we respect that many users don't want to give away any contact data (privacy policy)
b) we want to avoid that certain users get "spammed" with how-to requests. I know that it's an advantage of communities that users can help each other. However some users aren't interested in doing our work or helping us out or they even want to charge something for cutomizations we would help users with for free.

That said, I'm glad if users help each other in the support forum. If someone needs the contact data of another person/user he can explain the situation to us and we'll decide if we give away the contact details or not.

To save your support staff from answering the same thing again and again do a video on...

1) Using pages in the slider.
2) Using a static page as the home page without the slider being disabled.
3) Setting up the First and Second menus and deleting the descriptions.
4) Preventing two photos from displaying in posts.
5) Changing the default backrounds and headers.

BTW, Why can't this designed so it can done from the control panel rather than altering code by hand? It's a great theme but it's consuming FAR more time than I had bargained for just so I can have that cool slider!

The support interface is very inefficient. We can't upload screenshots. It doesn't notify us when our questions are answered. There's no links to common questions based on the question we are about to ask. we can't contact other members directly.

You might consider something like http://www.activecampaign.com/helpdesk/ or even phpBB would work better and it's probably provided free from your web host under Fantastico Deluxe. You could even monetize it.

Hey,

You should be running PHP5 not PHP4, just FYI WordPress 3.2 will require PHP5.

Glad you got this solved.

My installation has gone very wrong. Uploading through Wordpress produced Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_OBJECT_OPERATOR in /home/content/h/e/a/heathhost/html/wp-content/themes/brightbox/framework/php/class-framework-widgets.php on line 610

I have now lost all functionality within wordpress. Cant do anything.

I tried to upload by FTP but can not unzip theme folder. Doesn't matter what I do.

Downloaded from Themeforest twice. Download seems fine. Just can't unzip.

Please help.

Hey,

If I get time, I'll put together a quick tutorial on putting a page together, I can't promise if or when as I have a very busy schedule but I'll do my best to make some time for this.
