If I use the column layout (e.g., 25%–75%), is it possible to have, say, the left 25% column contain the widget, and the right 75% column contain content of the newly created current post? I took a quick look at it, but it seems like you have to select from a pre-existing page or post to populate the right column.&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62;Not that I know of no. You would need to use the column element in the template and have one part of the column set as a widget area (bypassing the sidebar layout entirely).&#60;/p&#62;
