I don't know how Genesis structures it, but they may not be using custom post types or something like that.</p> <p>The number of portfolio items shouldn't be an issue.</p> <p>There is a lot you can do with permalinks and re-writing them but there is also a lot of room for error and issues. Permalink complication can also significantly slow down a database.
