A featured image is uploaded by "Set featured image =&gt; Pick image =&gt; Use as featured image" (below the post thumbnail options). I think you clicked on "Set featured image", then you picked an image but clicked on "Insert into post" afterwards. The top one must be called "First" and the lower menu "Second". If you don't add sub menu items to the second menu you want get a dropdown list.
