You can check if you've selected "Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions (normally thumbnails are proportional)" under Settings &gt; Media. If that doesn't help I can recommend Nextgen image gallery: <a href="http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/nextgen-gallery/" rel="nofollow">http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/nextgen-gallery/</a> which I used on several sites and which allows you to display thumbnails with fixed dimensions (squares, etc.).
