You can create a custom menu by using menu manager (appearance > menus). You can add custom links, pages and categories. I posted a tutorial here: http://www.kriesi.at/support/topic/i-can’t-create-a-custom-menu-the-menu-behaves-weird

Hey,
1) Create a page or post and write the content you want to use in one of the mainpage columns. You can set up to three posts/pages on the mainpage.

2) Go to Display Options > Mainpage Options and set your posts/pages you created in step 1) as mainpage elements.

Hey,
@meet: thanks for helping us out.

@pangalos - meet's solution is user friendly. However if you're good in html coding you can modify index.php to include any icons, images, etc. you like.

I belive that is a simple one!
In your settings, make sure that instead of widgets are displayed on the frontpage, make it a specific post, and include a small icon as the small picture in the post.

I may very well be wrong, but you can try that out : )
