I managed to create a template with the slideshow element listed first. Then, I changed (on the edit screen of the page) changed the "Overwrite default post layout" to "Dynamic Template" and then switched "Dynamic Template" to the name of my new template. All changes were saved. However, the photo has a wide border around it.
