I am trying to add a widget area (full width) at the bottom of my home page, so that I may add custom widgets to this area. Could you please help me understand what I should add to the theme to accomplish this.
Apologies if this is a obvious answer type of questions, I am relatively new to themeing.

excuse me for the delayed response.
First add the following to the bottom of your functions.php file
register_sidebar(array('name'=>'Fullwidth Footer Widget',));
Then in your footer.php add the following right after the end wrap all comment.
<div id="yourfooterwidgetid">
<?php if ( !function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') || !dynamic_sidebar('Fullwidth Footer Widget') ) : ?>
<?php endif; ?>
</div>Now you'll be able to drag widgets there through your widgets menu.
