(1) is there an inherent author's box for upScale?
(2) Also, when posting a portfolio entry, there is no indication of the author or tags at the top of the entry (like it is with blog posts). Is this how it is? Can it be changed to show author and tags for portfolio posts?

1) There's no author box.
2) There're not implemented by default but you can implement the author and tag information. To add author support follow the instructions here: http://www.kriesi.at/support/topic/portfolio-by-author .
How to add tags:
Open up upscale\includes\admin\register-portfolio.php and replace:
'show_in_nav_menus'=> false,with:
'show_in_nav_menus'=> false,
'taxonomies'=> array('post_tag'),You must log in to post.
