    I just updated a few WordPress plug-ins, none of which were theme- or HTML rendering-related. I’m now seeing [av_submenu] codes and gibberish in my rendered pages.

    My partner updated WP, and that fixed the menus. Now I’m curious about updating the theme.

    How does updating the parent theme affect the child theme that we’re currently using? Our developers may have made changes to the child theme. Will these changes be lost?

    We’re rather new to this theme update thing…

    If all the changes were made to the child theme only, they shouldn’t get lost. In any case you can backup your current themes folder.
