1. How can I get the tiled background? I foundthe link but there's no ink on it. It's just a blank image?
2. Categories: I'm assuming this theme doesn't offer categories like NewsCast does for the navbar?

1) No the image shows a white pattern (floural design) on a transparent backgroud. Because your browsers' background is also white you just can't see the pattern - so you need to use a colored background.
2) Yes, Avisio doesn't have a category menu like Newscast has but you can use a category widget, etc

1. I'm using this image:
