resolvedI have downloaded some plugins recommended here in the support for uploading background images or colours. They work fine but my problem is that it seems like the background of my theme is set to transparent so the actual "site" portion is also covered by the bg image.
Can you please have a look at ihcstudio.com and tell me how to solve this. I don't know php well enough to feel confident messing around with the code.

BTW this happens both with images and simple colour changes. Say I change the background colour to red, the entire site changes to red

What code are you using exactly? For instance, if you use something like this it will in fact change the whole site's color.
body { background-color: #cc3300; }
