I am taking an existing print identity and creating a Wordpress site that matches. How can I go about adding a desired texture to the background of the site. I need a consistent, soft texture throughout the entire background behind the content area below the slider. Is there anywhere where I can easily place an image that will overwrite all the various pieces of the current light grey color?

depending on the skin you're using it will be more or less work. I.e. in style1.css you can replace the body color with another color and/or background image. It will effect most parts/areas of the website but not all. I.e. replace:
body{
color: #777;
background: #f8f8f8;
}with:
body{
color: #777;
background: transparent url('../images/skin1/bg.png') repeat left bottom ;
}to get the black "polished aluminum" background.
