1. The sidebar is not working and is defaulting down to the bottom of the page? This appears to me to be a coding error.
2. How can I make it default to a 'compact view' on the main blog page (how do I indicate abbreviated posts)?

Yes - W3c validator found some missing paragraph tags - please add them to your content: http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.industry-answers.com%2Fblog&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0 - I'd switch to html view to find the missing paragraph tags.
