I'm not getting the b/w versions of the thumbs overlapping the color versions until rollover. IN fact, there is a broken link icon there on top of the color photo.
Can you help?

Afaik WordPress requires the gd image libary: http://www.lost-in-code.com/programming/php-code/php-enable-gd-image-library/ to generate the "grey scale" images. Make sure that the libary is installed on your server. Please use tools like: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/ to regenerate all thumbnails and check if this fixes your error.
