If you have troubles since the update to WordPress 4.5 please read this post before opening a new thread.
I’ve created a whole series of categories which I’d like to have in the footer area and also within pages when set up as a template. The only ones visible (using the category plug-in, inserted into a footer column) are News and stuff / Uncategorized. How can I overcome this?
I’d guess that the categories which aren’t showing up don’t have any posts assigned to them?
The solution: create a temporary test post and add every category to this post. Assuming they now appear correctly, that was the problem and as you populate your site with posts in the different categories the temporary test post can be removed and they should remain.
Alternatively, you can use the Custom Menus to create your own menu and select this menu to use as a widget; the downside to this is that categories without any posts will show up as a 404 page not found error, at least until you add a post to the category where it will change to the archive view.
