The width of the headline, caption and link button become much more narrow when I move the slide show from the top position in the Template Builder. I notice that the navigation arrows also change from the large icons at the left and right edge to very small icons in the lower-right hand corner. I prefer the appearance the slide show has when in the top position in the Template Builder. How can I correct this or control the avia characteristics of the slide show?

You can try changing the options on the page where the slideshow images are set in the Slideshow Options meta box.
Additionally, the slideshow changes a bit depending on if its inside of a page split grouping and other factors. So try manipulating your layout in the template builder as the slideshow isn't completely customizable and has to have some restrictions so that it will work in all layouts.
