A general question...do the unused theme directories or unused plugins have any effects in slowing the speed of the site? Is there any benefit in deleting themes and plugins you are not using?

Hey,
it depends on the amount of unused plugins/themes. Basically I'd keep WP clean because it can save you a lot of time in the future. In addition you save hoster/web storage. Another point is that hackers could use unused plugin/theme files for attacks.
