I also initially got the 500 Internal Server Error while attempting to access the admin screen after the 4.0 update.
I had performed the update by uploading the zip file from Themeforest via FTP.

I restored admin access to the site by uploading the zip for the previous version I had, which was 3.8.5. I updated the Kriesi Customer Service user I had created previously to provide a fresh password for this post.

Then I reinstalled the 4.0 version of the theme, and was shocked to see the admin access worked. I’m still afraid to upgrade the production version of the site, since it serves paying customers who would be locked out if the server error occurs there.

Following Yigit’s instructions to create separate threads for login information. The site I updated is development, so the security certificate is self-signed.
