    Hi,

    You can place an image on the 404 page through opening 404.php and putting an image right below line 16.

    <div id='template-page' class='content grid9 first'>

    to

    <div id='template-page' class='content grid9 first'>
    <img src="http://dribbble.com/system/users/1397/screenshots/211905/beard_pad_dribble.jpg?1310555113" />

    To make it a featured image I believe you’d have to do quite some extensive editing, I’m not entirely sure how to go about it. Maybe Dude can help you.

    The 404 page displays if the query returns no results. The easiest way is to hardcode the image. You can also write an output function or use hooks, etc. but basically you can’t use the “standard featured image” by default. Maybe you can use redirection plugins: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/redirection/ to achieve what you want.
