I have tried everything, but I cannot seem to edit what shows up in the footer of the site. There are 4 columns, and when I change what is in the Widgets section under footer. Nothing happens. Please let me know. Thanks.

It should just be a matter of adding new widgets to each of the footer widget areas in the Appearance>Widgets section. In order for the default widgets to be removed at least one has to be in each of them.
If you have any kind of caching plugin installed, you may need to refresh the live view of your site a few times in the browser just in case it somehow is showing you old cache data.
