Hard to see menu

I tried to use a drop shadow so the menu items would show up better But it put the shadow on the sub menus as well and I don’t want that.
I tried to set menu link color to black in the advanced styling section but it doesn’t take.
Is there something in my custom css that is blocking that?

How can I make this main menu links show up better.
