I know very little about web design, but am trying to build a website using the Flagship template. When I purchased it from Themeforest, it was indicated that: “The theme comes with an extensive help file with videos to help you understand how it works.” however I cannot locate any such help files either within my download, or on the forum. Can you please help me to locate these videos?
I cannot get my site to match the live demo (particularly with regards to the way the images animate on the home page) and am concerned that it was created using some sort of custom code that someone like me would not be capable of replicating. I sincerely hope that that is not the case, as it would be terribly misleading for the consumer.
Thank youNovember 12, 2012 at 3:10 am #96831
You can start by Importing the dummy data. Just go Theme Options > Import Dummy Data. It will automatically create the frontpage template built on the Template Builder. You don’t need custom codes to create the homepage or the sliders. :)

Well, I am concerned that if I do that it will overwrite what I already have in there. You see I previously had built a wordpress.com site using Twenty Eleven, and I brought that over first, then applied Flagship, so I’m afraid I’ll lose all my data and images.
I am also trying to figure out how that slider even works. Is it only visible when the visitor first comes to the page, and then after that I must chose a static image? What I really want is a series of full width images (maybe just 3-4), and then have type and perhaps another, close-cropped image animate over them as I see in the live preview.
I am also trying to figure out how to get my portfolio page to match the live preview, where I can have four columns, and then when an image is selected, it appears larger, with descriptive type to the right, and forward/back/x buttons to scroll through them.
Sorry, I’m a long time print designer struggling to learn web design and it’s just so hard to get my head around it. : )November 13, 2012 at 3:14 pm #96833
The import dummy data button will *NOT* remove anything you currently have. Instead it imports in new data and some additional images to fill in the pages/sliders it creates. Its a great easy way to see firsthand how everything is set up.
Also make sure to look through the documentation file. Although its a bit sparse, it does give good basics if you are very new.

Well I imported the dummy data, and it warned me that it would overwrite, and it DID. The documentation is sparse indeed. I think I’m going to cry now.

What the data does is just add to everything you currently have and change the theme settings to reflect that of the demo. So page data and things like that are not lost, but you can now go through live examples of just about everything the theme demo shows.
Starting with a single page, try going through and filling it out as you need and for specific questions that aren’t covered in the documentation you can ask here.

Okay, let’s start with a simple one. For the content slider, is there any way to prevent it from automatically sliding unless the user clicks on the number buttons? Or at least to increase the timing between each one? And, what is the ideal image size for the large image on the landing page example. Is it 960 x 360?November 16, 2012 at 5:53 am #96837
Just above the feature media area on the page that is holding your slideshow there is a meta box labeled “Slideshow Options”. One of the options there is Slideshow autorotation duration. This is where you can set the period of delay between each slide in seconds.
To the left of that is where you can set Autorotation to Yes or No.
You can use images that are 960 wide and up to 960px tall for the slideshow (though I wouldn’t recommend that tall). For the big background slider you can go a bit bigger. The image of the man on the demo for instance is 999px by 666px.

Okay, I have most everything figured out except for the home page. I want it to function as the demo does. Is it even possible to have the big background slider rotate between say 3 different images, and for each image, some text appears with it? For example, right now I have the “landing page example” as my home page and I’m trying to edit it. Perhaps this is the wrong template to use?? It shows an image of hot air balloons, and some text that reads “Evoke Emotions”. I can see how the image is replaced, but cannot find any reference anywhere to that type or how to change it.

Also, I created some custom icons, saved as png and placed them in the folder with the other icons (iconbox folder), but when I try and replace the html with my filenames, the images won’t load. I see a reference in your documentation that they “will appear in the dropdown menu of the visual shortcode generator” but I don’t know what that is. I see a button in the visual editor that says “Insert Shortcode”, but when I click it, nothing happens.

The images on that landing page can be edited on the page but also look at what template it is using. For the one large background image (the black male in the demo) you can only use one single image or background color.
The slides go over top of this and are the same width as the pages content. The type in the example is an image with transparent background. So you would need to make new images in photoshop or something like it to get the exact same effect.
If you can link to a page showing your attempts of using custom icons maybe we can spot the issue. If you can create a temporary admin account for me I’ll log in and take a look.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I think I got the slideshow all figured out. So my next question is, Is there a way to have another webpage load directly into one of my wp pages? I have a catalog of products that I want people to search through. I currently have it set up as an image that the user clicks on, and a new page loads separately, but it would be ideal to have it load directly into my own site rather than as a new window that pops up.

How did you place the image link? You can place target=”_self” on the anchor tag if you want.
IsmaelDecember 12, 2012 at 6:03 am #96843
I’m just a wee little newbie, so I just placed the image into the body of the post and then added a link URL to it. Not sure exactly where I would implement what you mentioned.December 12, 2012 at 6:06 am #96844
Oh, I see what you mean (sort of). When I do that, the catalog fills the screen and my site “disappears” to the user. What I really mean is that I want the catalog site to fill the body area of the post…. so it sort of loads like an i frame.December 12, 2012 at 7:19 am #96845
You can switch to the “html” mode (text editor) and insert your iframe code directly into the post/page content.

Also, I am using the 4 Column Portfolio. I have made all my images the same height and I don’t want them to be scaled differently when viewed. They look great when they are in a row of thumbnails, but when you click on one, it scales just too large and the user then has to scroll to view the whole image. I thought that by making them all the same height in pixels I could avoid that.December 12, 2012 at 3:20 pm #96847
Can you link to an example? I’m not really sure what you mean.
DevinDecember 12, 2012 at 3:32 pm #96848December 12, 2012 at 3:41 pm #96849
Can we take a look at what you have now? I don’t really understand what you are working with at the moment enough to be able to address or answer your question.
As for general iframe code, here is a quick reference: http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_iframe.asp

Okay, I will send an email to your gmail address so you can login to my wp site in progress. Thanks!!December 12, 2012 at 6:22 pm #96851December 12, 2012 at 6:51 pm #96852
Yes it did thanks! Is there a way to simply update images in the media library? Currently if I make a change to an image in Photoshop, then add it to the media library with the same file name it had before, it makes a duplicate rather than replaces it which makes it confusing to know which is which.December 12, 2012 at 7:53 pm #96853
You’ll need to re-add the photo via FTP to the uploads directory wherever its located. Then use a plugin like this one to regenerate the thumbnail versions of that photo: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/December 12, 2012 at 8:34 pm #96854December 12, 2012 at 10:30 pm #96855
