I am trying to add an swf movie directly in a post I am writing. But all I am able to do is to link to it. Am I doing something wrong?

you can use the lightbox to display swf movies - more information can be found here: http://www.no-margin-for-errors.com/projects/prettyphoto-jquery-lightbox-clone/It's not possible to embed swf without using flash players like jwplayer or flowplayer.
