I am running in to a problem with my blog post images. The images I want to use in a blog post aren’t necessarily big to begin with. For example, I finally found a great image for this post http://oils4relief.com/three-ways-to-use-essential-oils/ but the original image size was under your “feature slider” size of 450×355. The only way I could get the image to appear at all was just to insert it directly in to the post.

Now though it won’t work as a “featured” image. Thumbnails are not generated, the main blog and sidebar widget areas are not displaying correctly, etc.

Do I need to only use images that are at least 450×355 in this blog for the theme to work correctly? If I can resize by increasing the canvas (empty background area around an image) of an image with a portrait orientation or a smaller original and still have it work, do I need to make sure the actual image is centered on that canvas, left aligned etc. to make sure the proportional images will capture it?

I do have Simple Image Sizes and Regenerate Thumbnails installed. Each time I bring in an odd sized image like this, do I need to do it through adding an image to the slideshow even if it’s not the right size, then running both these plugins on all images, or ?

If I need to pull all images and go try to find alternatives I want to do it now while I’m still small, but I’m really hoping there is another alternative because this will be an ongoing problem.

    Thanks,

    Liz

    Hi Liz,

You can use smaller images but they will just get stretched to fit the space. The default width with a sidebar for the featured image above the post is 690 pixels. You could also hide them on overview pages with some css or adjust the includes>loop-index.php and the individual post type loops to out differently too.

Its a bit hard to give one definitive answer but the intent is definitely to use larger images. If you want to do a different layout or not use them, its definitely possible it just takes a bit of theme customization.

OK, so I have to replace all images, then use the regenerate thumbnails plugin. So they need to be “690xwhat?” or bigger.

    OR,

What would I need to do to customize the theme so I could use images that are “250×400″ or “200×250″ or whatever and have them appear where the current “meta” information on the blog pages appear — the category, author name, number of comments? Would that even be doable? Or is it so complex I would I need to hire a programmer to figure it out?

    Thanks,

    Liz

If you aren’t comfortable with editing php files, moderate html and css then you would need to hire someone to customize it.

The image should be 690 width and 400 or so height to get the big square style or a much smaller height if you want the wide landscape option.
