How do I remove that or more to the point how does one upload an image and makes the text appear next to it and not under it besides uploading the image manually and linking the image manually. The BR tag does not appear under the HTML of a post, another really frustrating 'feature'
Portfolio 1 column example. Image then text...please oh please don t tell me I need to make a template just for that part

The position of elements on a page can be manipulated by a number of factors including content width vs image width; CSS: HTML output etc.
Can you post a direct link to the page with this issue and I'll look over it.

I checked the featured image section and didn't notice an additional br. Do you use html or visual view to edit your posts/pages?
