is there a way to "feature" specific portfolio item to be displayed on homepage, and still display the sort of different categories?

Hi xorred,

You could use the template builder to add an element above the porfolio element that shows a slideshow with some specific portfolio items of your choice.

This is assuming you are using a dynamic template for your homepage.
