I am simply another happy customer, so I apologize if I intrude. But I have a couple of thoughts on this, since I sometimes struggle with the same problem. The reason our ’portrait’ pictures become bigger is that they are scaled to the width of the content area. This gives them almost twice the size compared to landscape pictures. It’s a fairly common function in WordPress themes and web design in general. As to the slidwshow lightbox in Flashlight, it scales pictures in relation to the screen’s size, so landscape pictures still get bigger.
I think there are only two solutions to this:
1) Upload pictures of equal size (e.g. 900px x 675px) and don’t allow WordPress to scale them. Instead, center all images in the column. You get more blank space around portrait pictures, but at least they’re the same size as the landscape ones.
2) Crop all pictures to squares.
Very pretty pictures, too.
