Yes,

I'm needing to display user avatars for specific blog posts. How can I achieve this?

I've got this plug-in installed: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/user-avatar/

But I only think that it displays the user avatar when comments are added.

Is there anything by default that may cover this?

Hey j1980mac,

The plugin you've linked there is indeed for only when comments are displayed as well as your WordPress profile (view-able by registered users in the WordPress admin). If you are wanting to display an Author's avatar whenever they post a blog post, you would need to find a plugin for that or code that into the template.
