Hi I am really close to buying the Habitat theme as I love it and I am fairly new to WordPress blogs.

I am just trying to find out a few things.

Is it possible to have a static front page with a slider that has say 5-6 slides that have a transition such as a fade? (much like some of the other themes such as display) I realise I could just use the Display theme but I like the features on the Habitat like the Multiple Images on posts.

I also like on the display theme how it has menu tabs at the top for blog and portfolio so the home page is seperate from them.

I need to be able to update the home page content along with new work but not all work will be suitable for the home page, bit of an arkward set up but it should work with the right theme which Habitat could be!

    Thanks in advance.

    1) Yes that’s possible – have a look at the demo page here: http://www.kriesi.at/themes/habitat/a-little-about-you/why-habitat/

    2) I’m not sure what you mean but you can create your own menus – Habitats supports the new WP3.0 menu manager feature.

    3) You can change the page content anytime you like. Yo can also use posts and a category page to display your latest work.

    Hey thanks for the reply!

I have now purchased the Habitat theme so there is no looking back now!

I have changed my directory from /blog to the root so it is now my main site that will be hopefully Static Page/Portfolio/Blog.

One main question at this point is how do I create the Static front page (home) and Portfolio pages?

Oh yeah if you wanna see what it is looking like the address of my now WordPress theme based site is http://www.jcwsdesign.com

    Thanks

You can set a static front page under Options > Reading

Please ask if you need a more detailed instruction.

Great drawings by the way :D

Hey thanks :) I am hoping to get this site sorted out and get more work up, I think it will help drive me to do more.

I see the Options > Reading section but I do not have a page set up for the static page. At the moment I only have an About me page and a Slider page which was left over from a previous theme.

    1) If I am correct I need to somehow create a Static Page called Home and a Portfolio page with 1 or 2 columns much like this one http://www.kriesi.at/themes/habitat/a-little-about-you/why-habitat/ is this done using shortcodes?

I would love the menu at the top to be something like: Home – About – Portfolio – Blog – Contact

    2) How do you make the latest blog post fill the width? And how do you have the blog post title below the post image like the main habitat example front page http://www.kriesi.at/themes/habitat/

    Thanks again

    1) Yes you need to create a page. Go to Pages > Create new

You can call it as you like, choose fullwidth template for it (right sidebar in post/page editor) , etc. – then you need to add featured images to it (right sidebar, there you’ll find a featured image upload/insert field).

By clicking on insert image you can choose an image you like from your media gallery or upload one. By clicking on the + symbol you can add other featured images which will be displayed in a slideshow.

The columns are made via shortcode – the syntax looks like (avisio frontpage example):

    [one_fourth]
    <h3>Flexibly Frontpage</h3>
[dropcap2]1[/dropcap2]nean commodo ligula eget dolor. Aenean massa. Cum sociis natoque penatibus et magnis dis parturients mus.
    <img class='noborder ie6fix' src="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2025095/alwaysonline/avisio/iconsets1.png" alt="1" />
    [/one_fourth]

    [one_fourth]
    <h3>Unlimited Skins</h3>
[dropcap2]2[/dropcap2]nean commodo ligula eget dolor. Aenean massa. Cum sociis natoque penatibus et magnis dis parturients mus.
    <img class='noborder ie6fix' src="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2025095/alwaysonline/avisio/iconsets2.png" alt="2" />
    [/one_fourth]

    [one_fourth]
    <h3>Content Importing</h3>
[dropcap2]3[/dropcap2]nean commodo ligula eget dolor. Aenean massa. Cum sociis natoque penatibus et magnis dis parturients mus.
    <img class='noborder ie6fix' src="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2025095/alwaysonline/avisio/iconsets3.png" alt="3" />
    [/one_fourth]

    [one_fourth last]
    <h3>Shortcodes</h3>
[dropcap2]4[/dropcap2]nean commodo ligula eget dolor. Aenean massa. Cum sociis natoque penatibus et magnis dis parturients mus.
    <img class='noborder ie6fix' src="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2025095/alwaysonline/avisio/iconsets4.png" alt="4" />
    [/one_fourth]

    2) You can create your own menu under Appearance > Menu – you can link to any page/post/category or website you like.

    3) You can set the slideshow options under Habitat Options > Slideshow Options. Set “Featured Image Option” to “First entry…”

    Thanks that’s some great info.

As you were replyling I made a start on the structure of menu/page items and have made some progress.

I have now lost the main blog page! SO how do I go about bringing it back do I need to create one?

    Thanks

    #36194

    Also..

How do you make the most recent post on the blog page go full width like on http://www.kriesi.at/themes/habitat/

I have been able to set up the Blog page now but would like it to look like the main front static page on the link above.

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    #36195

    1) You can set the slideshow options under Habitat Options > Slideshow Options. Set “Featured Image Option” to “First entry…” – this will make the first entry slideshow full width.

The blog page will look as the demo page after you changed this option.

    #36196

    Thats great thanks.

Does the most recent post have to have more than one image for this to work?

I have the slideshow options set as you described but it still does not appear full width?

Thanks for all your help so far, I feel that I am actually gettin there now!

    #36197

I’m sorry. I missed that you’re using archive.php instead of index.php. You need to modify archive.ph so that it looks like the homepage. I uploaded a modified version of archive.php – just replace it the original archive.php with my modified version and everything should work as expected.

Archive.php: (deleted – because not required)

    #36198

I think I may have sussed it but not sure.

I havent added any new posts as yet, but I have edited my 88mph post to include a featured image where as before the image was embedded into the post and I think that was stopping the image from being used within the Slideshow as a featured image.

Check the current state of Blog page – http://jcwsdesign.com/?page_id=138

    #36199

The only problem I see is that the featured image is now duplicated. Try the modified archive.php – it should sort this problem out.

    #36200

Hey I can get rid of the duplicate by deleting the image within the post.

I don’t think I need to use the modified archive.php the main problem i have got now is the size of the image within the featured image slideshow box.

I have tried two/three images and they are all the same size 1920×1080 one is in Black and white and one is colour just for testing purposes check my blog page now. http://jcwsdesign.com/?page_id=138 no idea why the colour one is not being brought down in size like the sepia/Black and white one hmmmm.

    #36201

Another thing I have just realised is that when you take the image out of the main post (embedded) it does not show up in google reader if someone is following the RSS. Anyway of working around this?

    #36202

First – sorry for the confusion with archive.php. I didn’t realise that the picture is a static post image and not a featured image (it had the lightbox hover effect so I didn’t check if it’s an embedded image or a featured image).

    2) Interesting thing – I had a look at your source code and it indicates that the images have difference dimensions – some got resized to 1024, the sepia to 850….:

    <img src='http://jcwsdesign.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/bttf-speed-paint-1920x1080-1024x576.jpg' alt='Digital Painting - 88mph by Jonathan Stoker' title='Digital Painting - 88mph by Jonathan Stoker' />

Maybe try to regenerate thumbnails with this plugin: http://www.viper007bond.com/wordpress-plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/

    #36203

I noticed something weird going on with the image sizes, but the newest upload (sepia one) seem to work fine so I tried a re-upload.

Right okay, I seem to have fixed the slideshow image size problem by re-uploading the colour image http://jcwsdesign.com/?page_id=138

    1) This will mean I need to probably re-upload all my images for old posts but there are only 4-5 so thats okay.

    2) This regenerate thumbnails, is that for the RSS feed?

    #36204

No, WordPress generates thumbnails if you upload an image. It saves the image as you uploaded it (original dimensions) and generates some thumbnails from it. You can adjust the dimensions under: Settings > Media

Because the changes, etc. will only effect newer uploads the plugin above helps you to create new thumbnails for all images. This is possible because (as I said above) WordPress always keeps the original file (original dimensions) too. Kriesi’s new thumbnail generation function checks if there are already right sized thumbnails and – if it can’t find the right sized thumbnails it will generate images with timthumb.

To your rss question: This is because the rss feed doesn’t support featured images at the moment. I’m sure that it’s possible to implement this feature but that’s beyond the scope of this support forum.

    #36205

I will have a look into the image sizes but I think now some re-uploads may help so that the images look right in the Featured Image slideshow box.

Thanks for the info I will have to look into the RSS thing, there must be a way round it its not a major point at the moment but would be good to know if its possible.

    Thanks again!

    #36206

I think a quick fix at the moment would be to include a small thumbnail within the main body text of the post so that it still appears in RSS feeds. Not the cleanest method but would probably overcome the problem.

I don’t know what you think but I personally find it much more interesting to see an image attached to a post within say Google Reader.

If I come up with a solution to this I will post it.

    Thanks Dude!

    #36207

Yes I agree, images are important if you want to present your design projects..
