Should I use "Portfolio" or "icon boxes" for the 4 services? I like the graphics of using 4 icon boxes (in 4 columns) to represent hair, body, nails, and color on the services page rather than straight text. How does this impact mobile design?
I also want to use the four icons on the home page beneath the main slider in a simple text box in four columns.

You can use the icon boxes, I think it looks better using it. You don't have to worry about how the shortcodes will appear on mobile devices as Kriesi has made this a responsive theme and the shortcode's design is also responsive. In larger screens, you will see the 4 columns lining up horizontally, but on mobile browser, it will appear as 4 rows lining up which I think is appropriate on the mobile device. :)

The iconbox would most likely look like the second link. You can see in the demo site: http://www.kriesi.at/themes/choices/
The BUILD YOUR OWN SKINS, MOBILE OPTIMIZED, PREMIUM SUPPORT is using iconbox and columns shortcode (3 columns)
And in here: http://www.kriesi.at/themes/choices/template-files/shortcodes/ you can check the icon boxes (in 2 columns). It's just a matter of combining the column shortcode and the iconbox shortcode. :)

Thanks. I combined column shortcode and iconbox shortcode with ease. My third column is not working, however. Are you supposed to identify it with a "last" suffix? I tried it with and without an underscore. Also, there is a weird comment "Sorry, no posts matched your criteria" that I am trying to get rid off. Last question. How do I remove the header-breadcrumb bar and text from each page?

[one_third][iconbox title="Item 1" icon="Android.png"]Select one of the icons.[/iconbox][/one_third]And I don't have a problem with it, you can compare it with the ones generated in your shortcode, just don't pay attention on the differences in our text. There's no need for last suffix but I think the first one_first on your shortcode should look like this
[one_third first]
