1. Is it possible to have a shortened title on the portfolio main page (4 column display) and have a longer title on the single page entry?
2. Is it possible to display tiny thumbnails / preview images underneath a slideshow? Both on a custom template (front page) but mostly for a portfolio single page?

1) You can use the text-overflow: ellipsis; css attribute to truncate the title on overview pages. Add following code to css/custom.css:
.template-portfolio-overview .portfolio-title{
text-overflow: ellipsis;
}2) No, unfortunately Angular does not support a thumbnail navigation feature.
