    Hi,

I hate to ask a question that’s already been asked (http://www.kriesi.at/support/topic/preview-image-and-post-title#post-87279), but I ran into the same problem as SteveYoung (Go Niners!), except that I already had a dynamic template created and I still had issues after trying the suggestions. I chose 4 columns and only column 1 was set to:

    Column 1: Single Page

    Page: Alix Alvarez

Overwrite default Link: (left blank but I also tried entering a direct link to the Alix Alvarez page)

How do you want to display the page: Preview image and post title

The other 3 columns were left blank. This is what I ended up with: http://www.lotussf.com/artists-test/

The text and link are correct for column 1, but there is no preview image! For columns 2, 3, and 4, it’s a bit closer to what I want in terms of the right picture being there and when you click on the image, it takes me to the correct page. The only thing, is that I can’t seem to edit the preview image (I need to have his head in the photo!), and I’m not sure how it pulled that image to begin with as that image is not the one used on the specified page, although it is the same person. Also, when you click on the text below (Private: Artists Tests), it reloads this private page, which is correct, but after trying several different combinations of words/text/pages, etc. I can’t find a way to link up the correct text and page link (as in column 1) to an actual photo (as in columns 2, 3, 4).

    Please help, thanks!

    Hi AgentLotus,

The page linked is coming up with a 404 error.

If you can put up an example page we can reference it will be a lot easier to see whats going on.

The preview image issue is tricky because you can’t specify how an image gets cropped. You would have to FTP to your media folder and replace that specific image size with a version you’ve cropped manually.

Make sure that each page has an image set in the themes image gallery meta box that is under the visual editor. That is where the theme will pull an image from.

    Regards,

    Devin

    Hi Devin,

Sorry about that. It was probably because the page was set to private. I’ve now made it public. This is what it looked like:

    http://www.lotussf.com/site/wp-content/gallery/logos/artiststestscreenshotjpg.jpg

At present, it’s pulling up a different gallery which I added late last night to a different page (http://www.lotussf.com/galleries/) which has nothing to do with the Alix Alvarez page (http://www.lotussf.com/artists/alix-alvarez/) I’ve referenced:

    http://www.lotussf.com/artists-test/

The links now go to that gallery page instead of the specified artist page on both the dynamic template and featured media image for the Artists Page. Again, I’m not sure how it decided to pull these photos.

*In regards to your comments…my questions are in all CAPS:

The preview image issue is tricky because you can’t specify how an image gets cropped. You would have to FTP to your media folder and replace that specific image size with a version you’ve cropped manually.

-IS THERE A SPECIFIC SIZE THESE PHOTOS SHOULD BE FOR A 4 COLUMN PAGE ON ABUNDANCE? ALSO, SINCE I’M TRYING TO CREATE A PAGE WHICH SHOWS A HEAD SHOT, SHOULD I JUST TRY TO MAKE SURE THAT AT LEAST THE HEAD IS IN THE MIDDLE AND CROSS MY FINGERS THAT IT WILL BE CROPPED WHERE I WANT?

Make sure that each page has an image set in the themes image gallery meta box that is under the visual editor. That is where the theme will pull an image from.

-IS THE ‘THEMES IMAGE GALLERY META BOX’ THE SAME AS THE ‘ADD FEATURED MEDIA BOX’ UNDERNEATH THE VISUAL EDITOR? IF THAT IS THE CASE, I ACTUALLY ALREADY HAVE AN IMAGE (http://www.lotussf.com/site/wp-content/gallery/logos/artisttestfeaturedimage.jpg) SET AS THE FEATURED IMAGE FOR THE ARTISTS TEST PAGE WHICH IS THE ORIGINAL IMAGE I WANTED FOR THE FIRST COLUMN. IF SO, WHY DID THAT FEATURED IMAGE ONLY POP UP ON THE OTHER 3 COLUMNS WHICH DID NOT HAVE A SPECIFIED PAGE LINKED TO IT, AND WHY DIDN’T THAT FEATURED IMAGE APPEAR ON COLUMN 1 WHERE I HAD HOPED?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

    Sorry for the delay.

    1) To make sure I understand you correctly. You said that this page http://www.lotussf.com/artists/alix-alvarez/ is now linked to this gallery http://www.lotussf.com/galleries/ and that is not correct because you added the gallery to some other page.

Can you show me where the link is , IF you can take a snapshot of the page and upload and illustrate the image (imgur.com a good place to do such things).

What do you mean by columns, are you talking about the portfolio archive page where you can have a sortable portfolio that links to the portfolio item pages? I am a bit unclear where you are doing this, and how you are adding the columns (dynamic template buider option or you are adding a page that has a shortcode for the columns.

Please use images whenever possible with labels (along with site links) because what you are describing should not be happening and I want to be clear about what you are doing visually.

    Thanks,

    Nick

    Hi Nick,

The Alix Alvarez page (http://www.lotussf.com/artists/alix-alvarez/) isn’t linked to that gallery (http://www.lotussf.com/galleries/2013flyers/march2013flyers/), but is instead linked to the parent page (http://www.lotussf.com/artists-test/) containing a dynamic template which contains 4 columns.

Basically, what I have right now on my site is the page entitled Artists (http://www.lotussf.com/artists/). Currently, all of the artists have photos and links beneath them to their individual artist pages – i.e. the Alix Alvarez page (http://www.lotussf.com/artists/alix-alvarez/) and is listed underneath the other alphabetically. The reason I created the Artists Test page (http://www.lotussf.com/artists-test/), was because I don’t really like the layout of the Artists (http://www.lotussf.com/artists/) page, and decided to create this hidden page (currently made public so you can help me) to test out a new layout using a dynamic template. Once I’m able to perfect this dynamic template on the Artists Test page, I will delete this page and change the Artists page to use this template.

I would prefer to have 4 columns of artists on the Artists Test page and as many ‘rows’ of columns as needed until all the artists on my roster have their picture and link posted. Here’s a drawing of what that would look like and what I mean by columns on the dynamic template:

    http://www.lotussf.com/site/wp-content/gallery/logos/artisttester2_3_13.jpg

I sort of figured out how to get the correct layout for the Artists Test page using a dynamic template with 4 columns as one of the elements in the Template Builder. I set the ‘first row’ of this dynamic template to the following settings:

    Column 1: Single Page

    Page: Alix Alvarez (http://www.lotussf.com/artists/alix-alvarez/)

    Overwrite default Link: (left blank)

How do you want to display the page: Preview image and post title

    Column 2: Single Page

    Page: Amir (http://www.lotussf.com/artists/amir/)

Overwrite default Link: (http://www.lotussf.com/artists/amir/) <— Same results as column 1 when left blank

How do you want to display the page: Preview image and post title

Basically, I kept it the same as above in my initial query, but what I had done incorrectly before was that I only uploaded a picture into the “Featured Media” box on the post (http://www.lotussf.com/site/wp-content/gallery/logos/artisttestfeaturedimage.jpg), and not on the actual artist’s page (no screenshot for the fields were entered exactly the same as in the post). Once I went to the actual page (http://www.lotussf.com/artists/alix-alvarez/) and uploaded a picture to the “Featured Media” box, his picture showed up on the Artists Test page (http://www.lotussf.com/artists-test/). I repeated this step of uploading photos to the individual artist pages for the other 3 artists in the top row — Amir (column 2), Crazy Legs (column 3) & Daniel Best (column 4) — and achieved the desired result with the exception of the cropping of the photos. Alix Alvarez and Amir’s photos look stretched out so I wanted to know if there was a certain dimension I should be cropping these photos to prevent them from looking stretched out. I had previously cropped all the artists’ photos on the original Artists page (http://www.lotussf.com/artists/) and want to see how to have them roughly the same size on the Artists Test page. This is the only thing I now need to figure out in order to get my page looking the way I want!

For the next element on the Template Builder, I entered a horizontal row, followed by columns and once again chose 4 columns. If you look at the “second row” of artists beginning with David Harness (column 1) and Daz-I-Kue (column 2), I only set the dynamic template to their pages, but have not uploaded photos to the “Featured Media” box so only their names appear with links to their pages. What’s weird is that I have left columns 3 and 4 completely blank: http://www.lotussf.com/site/wp-content/gallery/logos/row2_columnselement.jpg

For some reason, the template is pulling the photos from my March 2013 page (http://www.lotussf.com/galleries/2013flyers/march2013flyers/) and inserting those images into columns 3 and 4 of row two, even though all fields for those columns were left untouched. Is this because this March 2013 page was the most recent page I created? I noticed that the Artists Test page was the second to last page I created. Prior to adding the March 2013 page, the Artists Test page appeared like this: http://www.lotussf.com/site/wp-content/gallery/logos/artiststestscreenshotjpg.jpg. I believe it was because, at the time, I had that black and white image uploaded in the “Featured Media” box so columns 2 – 4 were pulling that image. Truthfully, this last question is not totally important to me as I’ve mostly figured out how to create my dynamic template now.

    Hi,

I think you are going about this the wrong way unless you want to create your own archive pages, since Abundance doesn’t have a portfolio component. I would install a portfolio plugin

    or

… this will let you create a portfolio archive page which has functionality like this ( http://brinidesigner.com/work/ ) and the individual pages for each thumbnail – portfolio items (which will be you individual musician pages.) However since you already have the individual pages, what will be done is to force the thumbnail from the portfolio archive page ( http://brinidesigner.com/work/ ) to take visitors to the artist pages that you already have. The plugin works as a shortcode creating the archive page, and you can just insert the shortcode right in the template builder

A sortable portfolio is useful because if you have more than a dozen artists, it will become difficulty for visitors to categorize them or spend the time to scroll down and look for them all.

Your other choice is to upgrade to one of the latest themes by Kriesi which have additional options and include a portfolio:

    http://www.kriesi.at/themes/propulsion/template-files/portfolio-4-columns/

    http://www.kriesi.at/themes/eunoia/template-files/portfolio-4-columns/

    http://www.kriesi.at/themes/replete/template-files/portfolio-4-columns/

(the above can open on same page or redirect to your current individual artist pages)

There are also premium versions of portfolio plugins from different vendors http://www.nimble3.com/shop/premium-nimble-portfolio-plugin/ as well as from codecanyon.com that you can add to your current theme , or start with a free plugin.

Doing this any other way will just take more effort than necessary.

    Thanks,

    Nick

    Hi Nick,

Yes, I think you hit the nail on the head. I only did the columns in the dynamic template because this is my very first website and I have no idea how to code in order to get the right layout. I tried both the Awesome Filterable Portfolio (AFP) and Nimble Portfolio (NP) plugins but didn’t quite have the result I was hoping for. What do you mean by archive pages?

AFP was ok, but I couldn’t get a thumbnail or smaller sized image to appear on the page — only the full sized image which looked even worse than what I currently have on my Artists page. It seemed to have some glitches as I could not delete Portfolio Items and it did not allow me to upload images to the Thumbnail size, I could only copy and paste a link. I sat through the video tutorial and some of the options available on the video tutorial screenshot weren’t appearing on my dashboard. <— I’m sure these comments are far more useful on AFP’s plugin site, but this is all background for my Abundance question coming up.

I deactivated AFP and tried NP for comparison but could not get an actual image to appear despite all options and fields actually appearing on the dashboard. I left to grab some dinner and when I came back to tinker with the site, it said I had to log back in. The following screenshots are what I saw when I tried to login:

    1) The first and second links were of the same page (the second link is just a screenshot of the same page scrolling further down), after clicking to edit a page from the dashboard:

    http://s390.beta.photobucket.com/user/RhythmSF/media/SNAFU1.jpg.html

    http://s390.beta.photobucket.com/user/RhythmSF/media/SNAFU2.jpg.html

    2) After entering my login info and clicking enter, this is what I saw:

    http://s390.beta.photobucket.com/user/RhythmSF/media/AfterClickingLogin.jpg.html

I restarted my computer and after entering this into the URL: http://www.lotussf.com/wp-admin this is what I saw:

Warning: Creating default object from empty value in /homepages/44/d376656399/htdocs/site/wp-content/plugins/contact-form-7/includes/controller.php on line 131

Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /homepages/44/d376656399/htdocs/site/wp-content/plugins/contact-form-7/includes/controller.php:131) in /homepages/44/d376656399/htdocs/site/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 881

I can no longer access the dashboard and now most of the pages have this following bit of code at the very top:

Warning: Creating default object from empty value in /homepages/44/d376656399/htdocs/site/wp-content/plugins/contact-form-7/includes/controller.php on line 131

This is actually the second time this has happened to me with the Abundance template. The first time happened in mid-December. I had just activated the Woo Commerce plugin and before I got to really play around with it, I was logged out and could not log back in. I had posted on the forum but nobody could figure out what was wrong. The only thing I could do was have my friend who setup the site originally, go in the back end and reinstall everything. I just saw this posting on the forum and it sounds pretty similar except that I can’t even access the dashboard so I’m not sure how I would make sure this section of code is even there:

    http://www.kriesi.at/support/topic/site-broken

Any thoughts on what might be happening and if there are any alternatives to having my friend reinstall everything? Great suggestions with the portfolio plugins, by the way. Hopefully I’ll be able to test them again soon!

    Thanks.

    Hi,

An archive is a name for any page that is a list and usually created automatically (category list page, portfolio list, blog post list,, its just a word that in this context has a specific meaning so that bill gates probably invented.

I looked at your live site. http://www.clipular.com/c?2041023=0PM3slEoasBXIL51rsJKtyfLYqY Your problem is that someone set read/write permissions incorrect on some of your folders on the server. Contact Form 7 plugin does this when permissions are changed. Unfortunately, not a lot you can do without FTP, if you know your ftp login/pw, just connect and go to the plugins folder and delete the contact form 7 plugin and you can then get back into your website. if not then rename you plugin folder to plugin2 so wordpress can’t read any of them, and you will instantly be able to login normally.

I would suggest you either create a standard archive page such as the blog list page , keep playing with different plugins till you can integrate the portfolio, hire a freelancer, or spend $50 for a different theme. To look at this in a different way, figure out how much time you invested and whether spending 50$ on a new theme will let you use those hours to produce more than 50$ :) For now get your ftp info and learn how to take care of issues like this, because if you in this game you gotta start learning your way around.

    Thanks,

    Nick

    #105488

    Hi Nick,

Thanks, that worked and you were right about Contact 7 being the culprit.

I would love to have a professional do the site, but I didn’t receive a quote for less than $5,000 to do what I’ve pretty much accomplished (minus the portfolio plugin on the Artists page) using WordPress and Abundance. Even after all the headaches, that fee doesn’t seem justified.

I really appreciate all the help you guys give. Hopefully one of the portfolio plugins will get the job done.

    Cheers
