If you have troubles since the update to WordPress 4.5 please read this post before opening a new thread.
Is there a way to be more specific when displaying related entries?
Do I understand correctly that they are pulled at random from items within the same category?
If this is the case would it narrow the choice of related portfolio items down by having the items I want to be related in more than one category, i.e. if I had 20 items in ‘Category 1’ but only wanted six certain items to be related, if I then put those six items in ‘Category 2 ‘ as well (they were the only six in both categories), would they then always appear as the first six in the related items list?
This topic is still widely debated in academia since no one has yet invented the perfect code for finding related posts or products. The questions you need to ask yourself is – are you willing to sacrifice speed for more accurate related items? There are plugins that do a decent job of relating the items, but the problem is that extra second or more in extra loading time. As I am sure you are aware, Google uses page load time as one of the factors when considering how to rank a website, with faster sites taking precedence.
