If you have troubles since the update to WordPress 4.5 please read this post before opening a new thread.
I think I know the answer because I see a lot of question about this.
To be honest, I do not understand that in a premium theme, for which I pay, somebody tries to get a free backlink and free promotion.
What I mean is, that in every theme I have bought, it was possible to remove the credits by why of the theme options and not by changing the source code.
Now I have th change the code every time I do an upgrade. I do not have the time for that. I would even be willing to pay some more money for a theme, so please add this possibility into your next upgrade.
Otherwise I will buy seems from other authors, although I like your themes evry much. I just don’t think it is a nice way of owrking, the way you do this.
Thanks in advance.
PS If it is possible, I hereby excuse myself…
You could always make a child theme and put the modified footer.php into it. This is the WordPress way of allowing a parent to be updated while keeping your modifications untouched.
With Enfold there has been a new option added to remove the backlink from the admin but with themes before it the best and quickest way is to just edit your footer through the WordPress Appearances>Editor and delete the link. Doing it this way should take under a minute and updates are only out every few months at this point since themes don’t typically get updates unless there is a bug fix or major new feature added.
So while it isn’t the norm for many premium authors it is for Kriesi.
