Is there any quick way for the hover link affect to be removed from certain images (but not necessarily all)?
If it the link image can't be removed for only a few images, then how do I switch it off entirely?

No, it isn't removable from specific images. Depending on which hover effect you mean, both were recently posted in this topic by Ismael and myself: http://www.kriesi.at/support/topic/disable-mouse-hover-actions-on-product-images#post-95021
