I’m disappointed that this theme does not work with self hosted videos.
Can I expect the theme to be updated in the near future to allow self hosted videos?

I'm not aware of any plans to support self hosted video in Habitat. Maybe there will be a framework update (but no promises) in the future or Kriesi decides to implement this feature in upcoming themes.
You can use Flowplayer or jw player to play self hosted videos though.
