The images in my homepage gallery seem to be distorted (squished) in the square template. How do I fix that? I don't mind if it cuts some of the image out. I just want to make sure that they are not distorted (similar to http://www.kriesi.at/themedemo/?theme=expose).

I think that the standard wordpress thumbnail resize feature doesn't work on your server. I.e. the first image: http://www.wowthatisugly.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/snowflake-207x375.jpg should be 230 x 180px but it's 207x375px. The second image ( should be 230 x 180px too) is no thumbnail at all but original image http://www.wowthatisugly.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/mexico.jpg with 1712 x 2560 px. WordPress doesn't resize the images in your case.
Normally if wordpress doesn't resize any thumbnails the gd-image libary is not installed on your server (or your hoster deactivated or restricted the usage/access to this libary). Please ask your hoster to activate/install the gd image libary and afterwards regenerate the thumbnails with: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/ again.
