    Hi all,

    So two interesting issues I’m having…

    First: I can’t seem, for the life of me, to figure out how to properly designate a default thumbnail for my website so that every time I post a link to my site on Facebook or any other social site that allows thumbnails, this designated default thumbnail is used to represent my site.

    For example, on a Facebook post, if I want to put a link to my site, brentbarbano.com, it’ll give me 3 options of awful thumbnails that it randomly pulls off my site. I’ve tried 3 different Plugins, put different code into the Head of my site and literally nothing has worked. I’ve reset my history and cookies a million times as well. I have a thumbnail uploaded in the directory of my site ready to go. Can you please tell me a simple solution to this?

    Second: I have a Vimeo Plus account. Anything played directly off of Vimeo on a mobile device plays with a great quality with little signs of compression. But when I watch the same embedded video on my site, brentbarbano.com on a mobile device, it looks compressed and has a much lesser video quality. I’ve done several tests and the problem seems to only be consistent with my site and not Vimeo. Keep in mind, this is ONLY with mobile devices. Laptop/computers consistently look great between Vimeo and the same videos embedded on my site. Any ideas?

    Hi Brent,

    For the first question, take a look at this article on the issue: http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-themes/how-to-avoid-no-thumbnail-issue-while-sharing-post-on-facebook/

    The second issue has to do with your settings on vimeo for the video. Go to your video settings then Embed options. At the very bottom with plus accounts you have the Misc option for “Default this video to HD when embedded” .

    Regards,

    Devin

    Devin,

    For the thumbnail…I’ve tried this. It is NOT for a single post. This is for simply sharing a link to my main site, brentbarbano.com in a Facebook post. That’s the frustrating thing…every site or forum I’ve read only talks about single posts. But I tried the method you recommended and it didn’t work…replaced the example.com with the location of my thumbnail, etc… Where should I put it within the Functions.php structure? At bottom, in beginning?

    As for the Vimeo issue…I’m well aware of that option. If I go to Vimeo on my phone, the video plays HD. But only when it is embedded on my site does it play compressed on my phone.

    Keep in mind that all embedded videos that I have on my site from Vimeo play automatically in HD on computers…which means the “Default this video to HD when embedded” is working. It is ONLY on mobile devices off of my site that embedded videos play in a compressed and downgraded quality.

    You can either find a plugin that allows you to set it through the plugin options or you could add a conditional to your header.php to display the open graph url.

    <meta property="og:image" content="http://example.com/image.jpg"/>

    after:

    <!-- page title, displayed in your browser bar -->
    <title><?php if(function_exists('avia_set_title_tag')) { echo avia_set_title_tag(); } ?></title>

    Which would be something like:

    <?php
    if is_front_page()
    {
    <meta property="og:image" content="http://example.com/image.jpg"/>
    }
    ?>

    You may need to change the theme setting for front page and blog page and use the wordpress setting in Settings>General instead for this and I’ve not tested it but this is the general kind of thing you would need.

    For the Vimeo issue I really can’t say other than the settings on vimeo itself since as far as I know the theme doesn’t do anything to embedded video specifically on mobile.

    Ok, I tried:

    <?php

    if is_front_page()

    {

    <meta property=”og:image” content=”http://www.brentbarbano.com/favicon_big.png”/>

    }

    ?>

    And that corrupted the site giving it a syntax error so I erased it. I tried just:

    <meta property=”og:image” content=”http://www.brentbarbano.com/favicon_big.png”/>

    But that didn’t work either. I’ve tried literally 4 different plugins and all don’t work…I don’t mean to bother you anymore but if you have any other suggestions, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks.

    Devin, I take it back. It is now working. Seemed to be a delayed response! Thank you so much!

    Now how do I get that to work for all pages and posts? And not just my homepage.

    If you want to use the thumbnail for all pages you just need to remove the “is_front_page()” conditional – instead of Devins code above use

    <meta property="og:image" content="http://example.com/image.jpg"/>

    Thank you. It is now working. Much appreciated!
