    Hello,
My web site has been neglected for a while. I’m using the Enfold them with an Enfold child theme. It’s heavily customized.
I’m scared to update it and am kind of rusty on web development. It’s currently version 4.8.2 installed.
I can update it within WordPress…
I have done an entire site back up in my hosting account.
I have backed up the Enfold theme and child theme to my hard drive via FTP.
Can anyone please provide simple steps to take so this is a success and my site doesn’t break?
Is there anything else I should do to prepare? Anything I should look for afterward to make sure it’s all working OK?
A few months ago I attempted to update and the footer on every page disappeared. I didn’t have time to troubleshoot so I had to restore the site and deal with it later, which is now.
Will the footer disappear again? If so, what should I do to fix that?
    Thanks.

    Hey Moondreamer21,

If you have backups of your site then that should be enough, but you might want to consider copying the site to a staging area and update there first as safety precaution.

If the footer is disappearing after the update then please check if you are overriding header.php, footer.php or both in your child. If that is the case then please replace those files with the parent theme files, then add your customisation back in.

    Hi Rikard,
There is a header file in my child theme, but not a footer file.
So I would do the update… then if there is a footer problem, take the code from the backed up enfold child footer.php and put it in the new updated footer.php? And how do I know which code to copy and paste over or delete, or leave in there?
    Thanks again!

    Hi,

    Thank you for the update.

You only need to update the header.php file. Copy the code from the latest version of the parent theme’s header.php file, then override the one in your child theme, and proceed with the modifications. You can compare the differences between the files using tools like https://www.diffchecker.com/.

Thanks, I think I figured it out.
I copied the new header.php file from enfold to enfold child and it turns out it was just some pixel code in there that needed added from the old enfold child header.
Right now the site seems OK and the footers are working.
I’m going to give it a few days to make sure all is well and I don’t notice any problems.
    Thanks for the help!

    Hi,

Thanks for the update, there’s no point in posting about the same problem in more than one place though.

    Best regards,
    Rikard

OK, I’m sorry. I was worried that post wasn’t seen or showing up for some reason when I noticed other threads were getting multiple quick answers and mine had zero after 24 hours and wasn’t sure what else to do.
    We can close this one.
    Thanks.
