That's a problem nearly all themes suffer from - the reason is a css property called "width:100%". Browsers always calculate these 100% from the desktop resultion, so if you use 800px width and the footer needs 1280px you'll end up with a broken background. At the moment there's no solution for this problem - the themes would need some modifications (css and php) to solve it.
